Urgent - Calling all experience travellers to France

I know this is very last minute, but I am hoping to go to France on Monday (15/8/05) for at least 10 days. I am about to book a Gite in the Vendee, but unsure of booking the travel from Dover to Calais. Is it cheaper to book when we get to the port (2 adults and 1 4yr old) ?

We went with EuroCamp last year (1st time to France on family type hols and loved it), but this year they wanted £1800+ for 7 nights - thought that was steep. I have noticed the thread on Leisure Direction so I might try them, otherwise I will try to be brave and do it alone.

Any tips on travel would be appreciated.

https://www.speedferries.com ( Goes to Bologne but should be able to get a return for under £100 )

Just returned from France, took own tent as Eurocamp and Keycamp are expensive in the school holidays.

though they were getting very booked up otherwise stena are offering also at £50 return but they may be some restrictions . stena are trying to compete with speedferries and vice versa. friend just came back from la rochelle which is in those areas and love the old medieval town and an island called Aix which they walked or cycle around. also they really enjoyed the aquarium in la rochelle and my friend is french. hope that helps. I really enjoyed futuroscope near poitiers if you are near those areas too.

Yes leaving to last minute - so much to do.
I tried booking the ferry £250 on P&O - I thought that was okay except they did not have the times I wanted. Tried Hoverspeed and that was £138 - surely that can't be right. Also the time to get to the other side was the same. Am I calculating wrong.

Ended up booking with SeaFrance for £155 - which I am glad I did. Speedferries was sold out for all sailings. On the way back I spoke to another women. She had been booked on Speedferries, but it had broken down and they all had to then go to Calais to get on SeaFrance.
Also, I am glad we didn't go with EuroCamp - it was so much cheaper booking myself - the gite was lovely.
Thanks to all for their input.
