You should NEVER use electric blankets with memory foam. But you shouldn't need to because memory foam has a warmer touch.0 -

Ok, just read all of this with great interest as I spent half an hour this weekend lying on a Tempur Memory Foam Mattress in my local bed shop !!
Obviously this isn't at all to do with moneysaving as they are very very expensive, but these are supposed to be total memory foam, not a topper.
Does anyone out there have one, and if so, what are your opinions.
I am like an old croc in the morning, terrible back and neck pains. Thought one of these might do the trick.
Very undecided at the moment, don't want to spend a fortune and find out a topper would have been just as good, equally, don't want to spend money on a topper and find out that really I should have invested in the more expensive mattress.
Your thoughts are most welcome !!0 -

Hi there,
Firstly it is my understanding that none of the matresses are 100% memory foam. They are simply either a good foam with a covering of memory foam on the top, or a very expensive sprung base with memory foam covering - i'm never sure how much memory foam and i guess that depends on the price! Infact you couldnt have all memory foam as you would simply sleep "in it" rather than on it, it would engulf you!
I too have back problems (Mine is lower back) I woke every morning in pain and reaching for the painkillers!! I've had my 3" topper for approx 3 weeks and already I can say i have felt a significant difference in the morning :T !!
My mattress was a few years old and felt very uncomfortable, but with the topper its got a total new lease of life! I would think that unless your mattress is sagging a topper would be sufficient.
I did my research, and a couple of things I would suggest are check what the density of the memory foam is! I will double check mine and come bk and edit this post! I purchased mine from ebay from a company who seem to specialise in memory foam - the only thing I would also mention is that the one I bought is literally memory foam without a cover - alot of them particularly in the bedding stores are sold with a staycool cover and like elasticated corner straps to fit over your existing mattress. This isn't an issue simply buy a mattress protector from somewhere like wilkinsons.
As someone else mentioned - the memory foam really does smell when its first unpacked - It could do with being left to air with a window open for a couple of days when first unpacked!!
I hope this helps in some way. If i have missed out anything feel free to message me.

It sounds like someone has been telling you porkies. If it was a Tempur mattress, and not just a topper that you tried out, then only the top 3" would be memory foam. The rest of it will be reflex foam (just like majority of memory foam mattresses on the market). You can actually get a better mattress for a fraction of the price.
There are three basic types of memory foam mattresses:- Memory foam on top of reflex foam (like the Tempur one you tried). This is the most common type, mainly because they are the easiest to manufacture and transport. In fact anyone can buy a slab of reflex foam, glue it to a sheet of memory foam, then put it in a cover.
- Open coil springs with memory foam. These are on a par with reflec foam/memory foam, bu can sometimes be found cheaper.
- Pocket spring with memory foam. These are by far the best type for back support, but can also be the most expensive (apart from a few companies who over charge for reflex/memory foam).

Yes you are right Ellie, if it was 100% memory foam you would sink right down almost the full depth of the mattress, and would be far too hot. This is why the optimum depth is 2" to 2.5".My mattress was a few years old and felt very uncomfortable, but with the topper its got a total new lease of life! I would think that unless your mattress is sagging a topper would be sufficient.
That's right. A worn out mattress should never be revived using a topper as the layer under the memory foam is just as important as the memory foam itself.I did my research, and a couple of things I would suggest are check what the density of the memory foam is! I will double check mine and come bk and edit this post!
The recommended density is 60 to 70 kg per m3, althou 55 to 80kg is acceptable depending on personal preference. As someone else mentioned - the memory foam really does smell when its first unpacked - It could do with being left to air with a window open for a couple of days when first unpacked!!
The smell is caused by the fire retardant chemicals not being given enough time to dry 100%. The mattresses that suffer worst from this are reflex foam/memory foam mattresses, especially those that come vacuum packed and rolled up. However the smell should go soon in a well aired room. Mattresses that also contain springs don't tend to suffer from this as much because the air can circulate better.0 -
Well said & clarified!
It IS confusing buying one of these when some bedstore staff give you "misleading" details!
65 kg/m3 was the density of mine from Ebay.0 -
