I wanna buy a memory foam mattress or a topper - looking 4 advise

I would like some advise please....

I have a bedbase that is perfectly fine - but I have a bad back and would like to replace the mattress. I have been looking around, and have seen some memory foam mattress's and find them appealing!:D One of the bed shops told me these are just thick foam with a generous layer of memory foam on top, is that true???

I would like to gather advise on whether people out there recommend the memory foam mattress's and or what you think of the toppers? I have seen toppers in various thickness from 3cm to 7 - 8 cm I have it in my head a 3cm one would be useless??

All thoughts on the above much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I have had a 3 inch memory foam mattress topper for about 3 weeks now, brought from ebay. It took me a week and my husband 2 weeks to get used to it but we are now finding it very comfortable. I also have a bad back and although this hasn't been cured I do find now that I don't get up in the morning and hobble around like an 80 year old!!! My sister (who has several medical problems) has had a 3" topper for a few months and can't speak highly enough about it!! My parents have just brought a complete new bed and the memory foam mattress is indeed mostly the normal pocket sprung stuff (!) with a layer of about 6" of memory foam on the top. Personally I am quite content with just having a topper and I would imagine that the thicker you get, the better! Hope this helps!!

    Hi Ellie.

I actually answered this same question for you in the other thread. However I don't want anyone reading this one to get wrong information, so I'm copying it into this thread:
As long as they are good quality it is far better to buy a mattress with the memory foam built in. The pocket spring/memory foam gives the best support, and isn't as hot as the reflex/memory foam because the air can circulate under the memory foam.

There is a great deal of research and development goes into designing a new model mattress. All the components are chosen for their suitability to work together. If you just use a topper then it can be any mattress with any topper just plonked on top.
I'd also like to add that 2" to 2.5" is the optimum depth for memory foam. More than that and it will start to engulf you and make you too hot in summer.

The mattress that CK40 was talking about is a pocket sprung/memory foam mattress, which is the best type of memory foam mattress for both support and for not overheating because the air can circulate in the spring layer and dissapate the heat from the memory foam.

I did read your reply thanks!! I just felt abit like id jumped in on someone elses thread, if u know what i mean.

I keep thinking at a 2 or 2.5" topper will just be like flat when its being layed on - am i being stupid?

I bought a complete mattress with memory foam on top.
Bear in mind how you like to feel in bed (don't be rude, i mean temperature wise), I didn't get on with it at all, it made me very hot, but I like to be cool in bed, cotton sheets etc, you may like the warmth.
I changed it for a latex bed, much better but I am still a tad warm.
Take a look here, I found them to be the cheapest and the service was pretty good too!!

My mattress has a topper built in but you can get them from TJHughes either the mattress or the toppers . Double mattress under £200 topper £99
  • Hi Ellie
I purchased a double 3" foam mattress in January 2007. We use it on top of the old mattress. It is one of the best purchases we ever made. It is comfortable and moulds to your body. We doint find it too hot during the summer, but it sure relieves amany of the problems associated with a bad back and 'hobbling around' first thing in the morning.
I think I purchased it via e-bay, but the invoice is from Haji Ismail, of Southall. It cost £105.99 inc postage.
    Hope this helps

  • Hi again Ellie
I just looked through e-bay - I searched for foam mattresses - and it came up with well over 2000 ! I cant find my supplier, though.
    Have fun!

    Hi Ellie

I bought a 3" thick foam topper from Argos about 6 months ago and I love it. It costed me just over £100. I bought it in the shop and it was a bit heavy to take home, considering that I had to walk home with it not realising beforehand that it was so heavy! What I love about it is that it gives me a lot of support but is not too soft. It smelled strongly of foam when I first brought it home and I left it to unroll and air in a spare bedroom with the window open for a couple of days. I now put a mattress cover over it and tuck the cover sides right under the mattress and I also use a larger sheet (a king size instead of double) to cover the lot and so both mattress and topper are tucked down securely. Hope this helps. Lou

I bought a 2" memory foam topper from Comfort Solutions a few years ago. I spent ages looking for a topper that would be cheap enough with the right density foam (well, as near as possible to the density of proper Tempur toppers) and Comfort Solutions were very helpful and forthcoming with the information I wanted. My topper is still absolutely lovely - firm to the feel when cold, but shapes perfectly when you need it to. Hope that helps!
