The size of a "standard Bath"

Hi everyone

I really hope this isn't a stupid question, but it's driving me mad!

We have a modern two bed semi with a small bathroom. The bathroom itself is exactly as long as the bath. At the moment it has the same basic suite that was fitted when it was built 9 years ago.

We are looking to replace the bathroom suite and I am currently looking around for a good deal.

However when I get my tape measure out I get our current bath to be 1685mm long by 685mm wide. As the bath is literally wall-to-wall in my bathroom I need it to be pretty acurate.

When I am looking at various retailers for a standard sized bath - some have this exact measurement listed, others have 1700 x 700.

This is a stupid question - but are these the same "standard" !!!

standard baths are 1700, compact ones are 1500, is your current bath sunk into the walls at all and if so did you allow for that? have a look at the armitage shanks blue book http://www.thebluebook.co.uk/dynamic/section_index.asp?digits=7:1:0 i used to work at a plumbers merchants

We had a problem looking for a particularly small bath and found that the best answer was to visit a 'bathrooms' shop. They can produce numerous catalogues and the chances are that you will find a bath that is a similar size to yours.

SUESMITH is right. Make sure you are not measuring from tiles to tiles each end of the bath because the tiles will be OVER the edge of the bath and can easily make the 15mm difference. The width is also 15mm difference but half that could be under tiles too. The other half wont matter.

there are many many of sizes of bath maybe hundreds, i have the brochures at work to prove it
could be old 5ft 6 bath but most likely 1700 into wall, as it should be to be fitted properly

you would easily get a 1700mm bath onto that. Our bathroom is the same, in fact think our previous bath measured 1650mm and the 1700 went in easily as just channelled out the wall at the ends slghtly. Not a problem.

I had a similar problem a few months back, I agree it's probably best to contact the merchant your intending to purchase the bath from before ordering. I got my new shinny bath from bathroom supastore they where very helpful, and told me exactly what I needed to tell the plumber.

if there is such a thing as a standard size bath, then the 1700x700 is pretty much the one.
1500, 1600, 1700, 1800 are all sizes ive seen over the years.
plus a few very odd ones!

I'm no expert, but when we were looking at baths for our new cottage a few months ago I seem to recall that there still replacement baths for the old imperial size available from a lot of manufacturers. A common imperial size seems to have been 5ft 6ins x 2ft 3ins, which you seem to have. This works out to 1686 x 686mm and suppliers seem to round this down to 1685 x 685mm. A search for the latter size should throw up lots of possibilities.
