I dont know anything about AOL, but i have configured thunderbird email client to download all my emails from talktalk, yahoo and hotmail, and you can play any sound you like for email alerts. I have " your mother was a hamster and your father smells of elderberries" from monty python & the holy grail :o

I would imagine you may be able to do the same with AOL and it saves keep logging in to all your different emails

    Just a thought ;)

BTW dont worry you will still be able to access your emails in the normal way until you have configured it properly and afterwards

  • Assuming that you are running Windows XP, open Control Panel; Select Sound and Audio Devices; click on the Sounds tab: scroll down to AOL; Select either More Mail or You've Got Mail (whichever you want to change); Click Browse and select a sound file you would prefer to use. Any .wav file will do. (You could also go to the Sound Folder in your Aol Folder in Programme Files on your C drive, rename the More Mail.wav More Mail.old and then place a file of your choice there instead with the same name). Either method should let you change back if you change your mind.

I tried the methods as above but it doesn't seem to change, I did the first method and managed to change the sound to a chime and clicked apply, went staight to email settings to try but still the same rubbish sound. on trying the second method I found no sound folder in the AOL folder in programme files, just 1 folder (installers).

If you are not using AOL software and access your AOL email via webmail I think the only way you will get rid of 'you got mail' is to switch your sound off!

aol email, mine says "you have email" in a joanna lumley voice
Bring back mark and lard NOW! or else (please) clique member no. 10 :j

"When a woman steals your man, there is no better revenge than to let her keep him"

I maybe blonde, have many moments and have big bazookas but my brain is in gear
  • Joanna Lumley is the default setting, but you can chang to small choice of others. The wife has Barry White and I have Alan Partridge and Russian Kitty.

Here is how you can change

To get new voices, go to AOL KEYWORD (top of Aol Screen) and type in “Celebrity Voices” . Choose the voice and download each part into a new folder (which you can create in "My Documents" or wherever). Then go to “Expressions” (top RH side of AOL – artists pallet symbol) and select “Enviroment” , click Change and Use a Sound on my PC and alter the sounds to those in the new folder.

    Bingo - Have fun
  • Sorry I wasn't specific enough in my earlier post. The sound waves are in a folder in Program Files which is named after the version of the AOL software you are using not in the folder called AOL. Mine for example is called AOL 9.0 VR. There is a folder in there called sounds and then a sub-folder called UK that actually contains the .wav files.
If you right click on the AOL icon on the desk top and then selext properties it will show you the path to the aol folder containing the version of AOL software you are using (upgrading can result in several versions being on your computer).
