What to plant underneath fruit trees

I have just planted a mini-orchard of 3 apples, one plum and one pear in my allotment. I believe that I shouldn't let grass grow under the trees but is there anything I can plant there - herbs or the like - to cover the bare earth?

I think Bob Flowerdew says to leave the ground clear of anything for 2 years after planting, after that you can just have grass if you want it.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

It competes with the new tree, although he does say (BF) that if you mow the grass and return the mowings its a closed cycle. But I have a feeling thats for older trees. I'll look out the book when i have a chance.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0
