Shrinking Video files

I have just taken some video files off a DVD which is playing up, and I want to put them onto another DVD. But they are currently measuring jsut over 1GB for each video, which has been split into 2-3 parts.
Is there a program out there which will allow me to put the individual files together (to stop me having to open about 3 files for one episode) and also to shrink the file to a more manageable size???

I tried DIVX but it didnt seem to work, took ages doing something, but then told me after a few hours that it didnt work!
Im trying to put 3 .vob files into one, and shrink its size.Never knock on death's door, ring the doorbell and run away ..... he hates that :mad:0 -
AutoGordianKnot (AutoGK) is good. Download in conjunction with the ffdshow codec, and you can encode to xVid (a lot like DivX, but open source, and arguably higher quality.) It even lets you specificy a target file size, and it'll choose the quality accordingly.

Its normal for a film (for example) to be split into several VOB files. VOBs have a maximum size of 1gb. DVD's have to be set up like this in order for the DVD player to play them - http://stream.uen.org/medsol/dvd/pages/dvd_format_filestructure.html
If you want to just shrink the DVD, e.g if its a dual layer disc and you want to put it on a single layer (4.7gb disc) I've used Nero Recode for this, although I'm sure there are free alternatives available. This gives you the option to remove unnecessary subtitles, soundtracks and extras if you want.
If you want to recode them to another format (like Xvid or Divx) and shrink them then the already mentioned AutoGK is excellent and easy to use. This is useful if you want to keep the video's on your PC or if you have a DVD player capable of viewing DivX. You need to rip the entire contents of the DVD to your hard drive and not just the VOB files. DVD Decryptor is a good tool for doing this.
Once you've done that, in AutoGK you need to open the .IFO file for the video you want to convert and not the VOB files themselves. See the guide here http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/autogk.html0 -
DVDshrink is an excellent freeware app for backing up dual layer discs so they will fit onto a single 4.7Gb disc.

yeah i currently use DVDshrink. What i was looking to do was to put the separate VOB files together and to convert them to an easier format to use, such as AVI or DIVX. They will be kept on my comp, so VOB is not necessary.Never knock on death's door, ring the doorbell and run away ..... he hates that :mad:0

well googling 'vob to avi' throws up a lot of results, no idea if the products are any good.
Other than that, one of the sites I mentioned earlier should help. It's my problem, it's my problem

The VOB files contain the video but the IFO files contain the information about how they are linked together.
So if you had an episode of a program spread across three VOB files:
VTS_01_0.vob
VTS_01_1.vob
VTS_01_2.vob
If you convert the vob files individually you will end up with the program split into three files. But if instead you open the VTS_01_0.ifo file (in AutoGK) it will automatically join up the three VOB's for you.0 -

https://www.media-convert.com
You can upload all the VOB files to that website and select what you want them to be converted to. You'll need a fast broadband.
If you want all of the VOB files into one video, you can do this using HANDBRAKE.
It will convert the VOB files to MP4 though which means you wont be able to burn them to a dvd to play on dvd players unless you have Nero.0
