Card Fraud - Advice Please

Hi ppl

My mate lost his wallet in Spain over the past weekend containing his cc, debit card and driving licence. He lost it sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning. He then reported it lost on Saturday afternoon (after he finally got the number for cc company) and was told someone has maxed out his card (over £10k) on it. Company said they would freeze payments (multiples of £1500 every 30 mins) and speak to fraud dept on Monday.

He rings them up on Monday, they say they are going to let transactions go through and wait for transaction slips. They asked about his pin number being in the wallet (it wasnt) so we think the only way they could have done it was via signature from card or driving licence.

They told him he should have gone to police to report it stolen but he doesnt know it was stolen or not plus the guy he first spoke to on Saturday afternoon didnt mention this. I also would have thought they would have called him if repeat transactions were going through (they did for me when I spent £1200 on an item a while back).

I spoke to him tonight and he is really worried because of the amount and they said it can take 10 days to receive the slips.

Can anyone offer some advice I can pass on as to where he stands, what's likely to happen etc. I told him he'll more than likely be ok because it must be a dodgy signature but it's not really helping if you know what I mean.

Cheers
