I've been considering a new combi boiler for a while now, and yesterday saw the British Gas new boiler discount advert . I've just gone ahead and booked them for an appointment next week, but thinking now, I wonder just how competitive they are likely to be.

Anyone else had BG in for a quote?

about twice as much as the going rate. however you can usually pay in installments and they'll come when they say they will.
  • We had them in for a quote and they were shockingly expensive!

Well over £4000 for a new combi boiler when we have had other quotes of between £2000 - £2500. The deal with British Gas is they will come up with repayment options, but consequently you pay over the odds. My advice, find a local person to do it for less money who does not need all the extra income to use on expensive advertising!!!

Hi, We were seduced by the same offer last summer. I think the quote they gave me was inflated to cover the £700 they were going to reduce it by, even though some of it (I think £300) was a government sponsored scheme.
Anyway I went ahead and they replaced my boiler only with a Worcester Bosch condensing for approx £2300 which included a power flush which they considered essential. I would say this was the same or more than a local plumber would have charged, however I was pleased with the finished job.

Hi notbritishgas - when you say they replaced with ONLY a Worcester Bosch, are you saying that you found this to be a poor boiler. I ask because there are 3 combis on offer and a Worcester Bosch is one of them. Or were you possibly disappointed because it was a condensing unit?

Just last week we had someone round from British Gas to give us a quote for a new combi boiler system and they came up with £3250 and that was with £500 off! Luckily my dads friend is a plumber and got him to look at what british gas had drawn up and he said it was obscene! He then gave us a quote of £1450 last night (fully fitted, same boiler on good friday!). I would say make sure you shop around and get some alternative quotes, the british gas salesman was a right smarmy tw*t and full of patter. Also watch out for the £600 'powerflush' which is necessary apparently, a service the other plumber said wasnt necessary for us but British Gas were guna charge us for.

Also with the payment plan, if we had payed the minimum amount each month with no deposit then it would have cost us over £7000. Be very wary of British Gas theyll try to take you for every penny. Their salesmen that come round are just that salesmen, they actually have little knowledge of plumbing systems and are just full of speel!
  • RE: recommended Power Flush!

Combie boilers are susceptible to the dirt & sludge found in EVERY house hold heating system in the country, unless of course you are having ALL new pipework installed across the house (as in a NEW BUILD).

If you are having a new Combi fitted to existing pipework, a 'FLUSH' of some description is advisable, especially if you want your boiler to last more than a few years ................. so look in to doing it yourself, only without the 'power' part. Your local Screwfix sells the Fernox range of cleaners, flushes & inhibitors, so take a look and save yourself a fortune.

Also a good idea is to fit a 'Sludge Trap', as in a "BOILER BUDDY" ........... (look it up on Google) ........ It simply fits inline with the pipework to your boiler and helps trap all the dirt/sludge & rust particles, that clog up the internals of the boiler. They are easy to fit and maintain, plus you get to see how much crap is inside your system (to start with!).

I've seen them go on the auction sites, for around £35 ................. a very sound investment, that not only helps save repair cost's on your new boiler, but also helps cut down the problem of 'gassing' often found on old radiator runs, where the rads either nock/bang, fail to heat up fully or become clogged-up!

Anyway, have a look into cleaning your system out yourself ................... it's easier than you think ............you only really need a POWER-FLUSH if you have long pipe runs [IN your Mansion???] ........ or do not have the time to stand around, filling & emptying your system???

    Hope this helps .........................?

Sorry Geoffo I worded that badly. What I meant was that they only replaced the boiler, no other work was done apart from the power flush, which they insisted would have to be done or they would not change the boiler. This backs up what scooby has said in an earlier post.
I was offered the choice of two boilers, A gloworm or the Worcester, I think the name Bosch convinced me. It was installed last July and no problems since (perhaps I shouldn't have said that). I am definitely saving on gas over my old inefficient boiler.
Should also have added that my boiler was just an ordinary one, not a combi. If you are changing from ordinary to combi there is more work involved with the pipework and taking out the hot water cylinder etc, so prices will be higher.

A friend recently had a Worscester Greenstar 30CDi fitted (I think it was about 35Kw) - he paid approximately £1200 for the boiler, and about £300 to a plumber to fit it...
