Xbox 360 can I return it if I dfont use it but the box is opened? With a good reason

Hi all,
I have a Xbox 360 and wanting to buy a newer model. The version I want to buy is the 360 Arcade pack. Microsoft have changed the Dvd-drive in them but use two different types.
I was wanted a model with a specific drive type inside because its quieter and more reliable. You cant tell which drive type you have without looking at the console itself.
I'm wanting a newer batch one so I can get the improved drive.
If I bought one and and looked at the console and it wast the drive inside I wanted Am I within my rights to return it for exchange or refund If I don't use it or plug it in?
You can tell without have to operate it, by looking. Of course the package box would have to be opened.
Were would I stand with this one?
Many thanks

It cant be resold if you open the box, so no you cant take it back if you do that. However, it is possible to tell from the serial which can be viewed by a tab on the box, so you don't need to open the actual box, just the serial tab.~Diminutive0

Hi thanks
Yes I know I can get the serial number but when I have it what do I do then to tell which drive is installed?
I've had lots of problems with 360's and many friends that have so when I buy my second one I want the most reliable version with the newest drive.
Would be great if I can check this somehow.
Many thanks :T0 -
Could you get it from somewhere and ask them to open the box before you buy it, then if it isn't the one you want, don't buy it?Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

google xbox 360 serial numbers there are sites with lists to tell you what to look for.
most retailers wont open their stock for you.... would you want to purchase already opened stock.~Diminutive0 -
I've rang some shops and they wont and I've been into them also and asked.
No of them will do it.
I find this very unfair as a consumer I want to make sure I have the latest components inside and with the history of the 360 I do not want to buy one and then found out that it has the older drive inside.
God so annoying.0 -
Yes I've seen some lists and there are only a record of what people have got not a way of telling what drive you have installed in the one you buy.
And if I had an idea of the batches which are likely to have the newer drives what then?
Go around hoping the hundreds of thousands of stock just happen to be the right batch, near enough the national lottery really
No I wouldn't want to buy one opened, then again I don't want to buy something which has a long history of faults and were I cant know what parts there are inside.
Would anyone buy a car and and not find out what engine is inside?
Any help appreciated0 -
If you buy it by mail order you can inspect the item and return it within 7 days under the Distance Selling Regulations.0

but you will probably have to pay for the return and there maybe a re-stocking fee.0 -
They do have an extended warranty now so hopefully any problems (long down the line) should be covered.
I've had an xbox from the start and never had a problem, its the age old scenario of not everyone posts on the web saying 'my xbox is working fine' its only those who have problems who post up.
I read a white paper from a research lab in the states that isolated the failure to the cheap solder on the chipsets, these were subsequently changed and have been rolled out.
I do concur that the DVD is noisy, infact like a hovercraft, but this is not really a contributing factor to the xbox failing.
Depending on where you bought it from they may take it back un opened, supermarkets are usually good for this, high street gaming stores seem to be funny.0 -
Are you sure it's not just because some drives are easier to flash?Bankrupt 28/07/08!0
