google TOR for an easy, free method, it does affect performance dramatically (each page request redirected through various 'onion' servers). there are faster methods, but none that i know that are free.
not convince i know what you mean by a tracing virus, your pc security (which you do have?!) should protect you from most things.
its quite possible that someone has been telling you scare stories which have very little basis in fact, the internet is full of such modern urban myths and virus hoaxes.

do you have a fixed ip ?
if not then it maybe different each time the connection breaks and is re created, and more likely you have an isp ip address, which isn't really much use to anyone.

if you don't want where you visit to be tracable by the hosts I would suggest the solution mentioned above,
you can always test whether it works or not by going to one of the many what is my ip address sites,

    kind regards,
    G

    Yes.

No. It will, however, mean you need to use a proxy server which will slow things down and you probably wouldn't want to be doing any online banking or anything else sensitive.

Looking at a different interpretation of what you are asking, you can hide the IP address of the PC itself by connecting your broadband connection to a router and employing Network Address Translation.

This means that, it if you configure the router correctly, it is impossible for your PC to be "port scanned" from the internet.

Most current routers should be able to do this without significant impact on network performance, but it may make life a bit more complex if you use any form of file sharing.
