My friend got a free laptop paid for by the university. Not entirely sure why but it was worth over £1000. I got mine off ebay as there are some good deals, but make sure you buy from a reputable company0

Dont even think about any of the free laptops with broadband deals. The increased subscription charges and minimum contract pay for the laptop. Get in touch with a computer company that supplies businesses with laptops - I got mine from one based in Matlock, but was a couple of years ago now, cant remember the name. Bascially these companies are sort of facilities management companies with a contract to keep their clients IT at top spec, so take away the old computers when giving new ones. Business laptops are usually much higher spec and more future proof. Mine was £200 (then) and had 1gb ram 80gb hard drive pentium M 1.8ghz - the equivalent in a shop (at the time) was £900 (now about £300). I even got a 3 month warranty. Its in brilliant condition, and I still use it now it still cuts the mustard.
My girlfriend was trying to buy one from a shop recently and the deals are just no good... if you really want a new one your first stop should be http://www.ebuyer.com0 -
P.S. if you are dyslexic or have learning difficulties you should be able to get a free laptop or at least the use of one from your college. My friend from uni got an £800 laptop and sold it! haha! If you don't need a laptop then get a PC you can get a PC as good as a laptop for only just over £100 with an old fashioned monitor (no flatscreen or anything). Don't be scared to buy reconditioned etc.
I had a PC but purchased a laptop when I went to uni, its great being able to do work on your knee in the lounge while watchin TV and take it wherever you want.
If you do get a new one and would be unable to afford a new one, consider some insurance.
If you really want to save money, why not just do your work at college on their computers? You can even print for free.0
