Dodgy job Offer perhaps??

Hi all,

must admit I don't post here regularly but anyway, as a student, I phoned a company in order to ask questions about a job offer which I saw advertised. The woman I spoke to didn't even try to find out what my questions were but simply said: 'I'll send you an email now' and this is what I received: (read below) It all sounds ever so strange to me. They want to interview me when all I wanted to do was ask questions! AND they PRESUME that I can make it down today. Why couldn't she have just spoke to me over the phone?? If anyone has ever come across these people, be careful i'd say.

Sounds like selling encyclopaedias or insurance: on commission only.

it's not dodgy, I presume they are too busy to talk to you, so sent you a generic message that they send to all applicants!

Michael wisher & Associates Ltd. seems like one of those companies that offer a lot of students jobs because they can get away with paying lower wages for professional service & no strict set hours etc. I know students at London unis who have been on similar jobs - there are a lot of companies around and they target students as they require young people who can work anytime. It's not really set hours, they just call/email you when they require you for an event - so it's good for spare cash on-the-go and if you have nothing better to do, but not if you need something more reliable.

That said, the fact that the second question on their application form asks for bank details seem very strange. They appear to be in temporary rent-out office units so be careful before giving any details away, as they can just pack up and leave anytime with your personal stuff. Ask questions at the interview about their business, how long it's been running, and registered, and get in contact with their 'clients' - do some background checks.

.... Maybe I've been watching too much of "The Real Hustle" :D But you can never 100% trust temporary offices.

Let us know how it goes, as I might consider giving it a try myself.

Michael Wisher is a legit company. They do mainly catering events and that sort of thing. I was registered with the Manchester office and they did loads of things at Haydock Park and Old Trafford.

London office does stuff such as Royal Ascot and such like.

Just to give you an idea, I found a friend who works for them and she gets paid minimum wage & it's really hard work.

Thanks Candyflossing. Yeah, I thought it might be minimum wage but when your a student I suppose your more likely to take whatever you can. Well, like I said, I wont bother with them anyhow - i'll just keep searching!

As a student myself, I'd suggest using companies such as this for the references/experience & training (which is free) ... before moving to a more up-class bar/restaurant.
