Conveyancing - selling in England, buying in Scotland

Hi

Am thinking of selling my home in England and buying one in Scotland. However i have been told that rather than having one solicitor for who will take care of both selling and buying (to save costs) i will need 2...one in england and one in Scotland as the laws are different. Is this true? If so can anyone recommend a really good conveyancer in Scotland who offers excellent service at a competitive price.

thanks : )

When I moved from Scotland to England I needed 2 which was a bit of a pain at times but, hopefully it should be easier your way round.

Scotland is a big place so recommending a solicitor could be difficult.

  • You have to have solicitors in both countries as the house buying process is very different.

Just be aware that you are likely to commit yourself to the Scottish purchase at an earlier stage than you might in England, so take things easy until you exchange contracts on your sale.

some firms near to the borders may have some solicitors in their office who are licensed to work in England and wales and some licensed to work in Scotland. Might keep the costs down abit.
    Only guessing though.

Hiya. yes, unfortunately the system is different here and they have different forms apparently (cos I asked my English solicitor and he said no). I used Conveyancing Direct which is an online outffit but is based in Glasgow so you can always go see them. and they have telephone contact so not just email. it was £329 incl VAT and that was last August. I had some problems with my move but that was down more to the guy i bought off keeling over the day before i was due to move in. Long saga! I am using an online solicitor again to sell my house in England. so much cheaper than high street ones.

    hope you get on ok

ps. that was just for a purchase

Hi, just wanted to say that I've also used Conveyancing Direct (house purchase in 2005), can't remember the fee (somewhere around the £300 mark I think) but found them pretty good via email and over the phone.

I would'nt recommend "Conveyancing Direct", they are not a very good company to deal with, not had a good experience myself with them. Rarely will there answer their phones or call you back the same day.
