It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

My machine is a desktop but it's a HP one and I recently had to do system recovery. Even though I have a disc I also have the option on start-up to do a recovery without the disc by pressing "F11".

From then on it's just a case of reading, select the correct option (easy) and clicking next then sit back for about 15 mins.

My laptop has a recovery drive which I will try first but when I clicked on it it said folder empty - so I might have to use recovery discs I made when I first got it - i just don't know how to use them.

The computer is only a month old but some of the files have been lost when I removed Nortons Internet Security that it came with.

I have an HP530 laptop and I made the 2 discs as well (by the way what happened to the recovery partition?).

Put disc one in the drive - boot up - press F9 when the HP screen comes up - press boot from optical disc and away you go.

aardvark- my HP laptop had the same problem with the recovery partition, there were no files in it when I went to look in the folder, I wonder what that's about? I had to use my recovery disks in the same way Dennis suggested - you have to boot from the CD in order to recover the system.
