So you are able to pick up emails and view them, everything OK until you press DELETE on any existing email? Is is one particular email? It is a known issue that corrupted (or maybe virus infected) emails can cause a hang when you try to delete them.

If so then try this advice from Microsoft's own site:

"if you click on a corrupt (or infected) email once to select it, and then hold down the Shift key and the Delete key on your keyboard, it will permanently delete the email message"

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx#EOAAC

not sure yet if this is really what is wrong though... also, disable the e-mail scanning module in your anti-virus proggy if used and see if the same happens.

it is with any email, i have installed my virus protection just now as last time i installed it it crashed the computer, so might have virus on emails? yes i know i should have had protection but do use spybot.

now since doing a scan, still scanning it is now duplicating emails 30/40 times, still delete button not working, have over 600 emails now

Hmm, are you willing to lose your existing emails? Probably not, in which case yo have have to obtain a tool like DBExtract to repair/recover. No sure if therer are any really useful free tools for this out there...

Are you able to export your Outlook Express folders? This might be a good idea to preserve what you have got.

You could then move all the email folders to another place, on starting Outlook Express, new empty folders ie Inbox, Sent Items etc get created. This will allow you to check if you can receive and delete emails in the future.

If you do have auto email scanning, turn it off while trying to sort this out.

If this seems virus scan related, which brand of scanner? You could try uninstalling it and installing a differnet brand. Or de-activate the virus scanner and do an online scan via https://www.bitdefender.com - it is quick to get it going and it deletes viruses found in emails immediately.
