You might also want to download Memtest and leave it running for a while to rule out RAM problems - for example SystemRescueCD has a copy of Memtest, and it's Open Source and free.

Also, be prepared for it to be your Hard Disk on the way out - particularly if SMART has tripped on the drive - download the drive maker's diagnostic utilities to find out if it has.

I've ordered a new stick of 1GB ram to make sure, and I don't think its the hard drive because I've got two hard drives (one not connected with a fresh install of windows on it, for emergency's) and it plays up on that one as well.

On my main hard drive I have a partition 40GB ON 'C' and 120gb on 'D', is it possible to move files from C TO D and then reinstall windows on C ?
If so is it just a case of fomatting c and then running the XP disc to reinstall, or is it more involved than that.

Yes, that's how I'd do it - don't forget to back up things like your browser favourites, your email client inbox, etc onto your spare partition.

And don't forget to download the motherboard device drivers from the makers website - it's really annoying to find that you can't get online afterwards when the on-board NIC won't work!

It depends on which client software you use. In MS Outlook it's often a file called outlook.pst, but you should be able to find out through the advanced setup options. Afraid I'm on Linux now using Evolution as an email client, so I don't have an example to look at.
