I think we're just gonna have to get round it by having a dedicated machine for internet access, one which isnt connected to the work network.

Why do you think wireless will be any faster? If the same broadband connection is being used, the speed will be the same regardless of whether it's wired or wireless.
Regardless of the fact your department boss has asked you, if it's against IT policy (which your comments suggest) and the admins find out, WHICH THEY WILL VERY EASILY, you can guarantee your boss will disavow all knowledge and you'll be on the dole.0
