yeah we receive council tax benefit, but when they work it out they take my student loan as income so we only get a little bit. they reduce the bill by 25% student exemption for mw, then work out her benefit on the rest using my income. they dont seem to accept that as there is only two of us, i should be exempt, she should get 25% discount as she is a single person as I am invisible, and then the benefit should be worked out using her income which is virtuually nothing - not mine. how can they use mine when i should be exempt? they just refuse to accept any of it0

If a full time student shares with a non student, Im assuming the non student has to pay some council tax?
Would they be liable for full amount or get 25% off as a single person?
I live with a non-student. We claim 'my' 25% discount and then I make up the other 25%, as if wasn't really fair to expect my OH to have to pay more council tax, just cos I was of to Uni again!April Grocery Challenge £81/£1200 -

but if your other half was in a position where she was entitled to council tax benefit, would it be fair to include your student loan as income?0 -
Hi Guys,
For the last 8 months we have had a house made up for 50% students and 50% workers (2 and 2)
We were advised that as only 50% are students were were entitled to no relief/discount.
Firstly is this true? (If not can we claim this excess back?)
Also next year I will be in a similar situation.
2 students and 1 worker? Does anyone know if we can have relief here?
Thanks

As their are two non-students in the property then a full Council Tax charge is paid -Also next year I will be in a similar situation.

As their is only one non-student in the property then a 25% discount will be given on the Council Tax.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
