Buying Road Tax Online without an MOT

My road tax will expire at the end of this month so on Saturday I ordered and paid for this online. The transaction went through ok, and the payment was taken.

However I don't think that I have a valid MOT. My last MOT expired in Feb 08, and I don't remember taking the car to the garage and having it renewned.

Does anyone know if I can purchase Road Tax online without a Valid MOT?

My local garage can provide a duplicate certificate, but they have to pay £10 to do a search in the system and it seems silly to pay £10 for the old certificate that I already in my possession.

Thanks

I didn't think you could buy your road tax online if you had less than 2 weeks of your MOT left to run.

You cannot buy tax without a MOT, I have this problem every year wheres my tax is due the day after the MOT meaning if my car fails it MOT I have to drive the car without any tax to get it retested.
I always try and get it MOT'ed early now.

You can get your car MOT'd up to 1 month before it expires and it will expire 12 months after the original expiry date so you get the extra time "free" and get time to sort out the car if anything is wrong.

    Thanks

You shouldn't be able to - it's supposed to check that your car is on the MOT and insurance databases before issuing it. If it let you it suggests that what's recorded there might not be accurate.

Use the motinfo link above with your V5 document ref number and your registration, no need to pay the garage £10.

Then let us know what it says.

I believe that you are allowed to drive a car to an MOT testing station without tax so long as the appointment is booked.

Yep as long as you are insured and you are driving to pre-booked MOT then you can drive directly to and from MOT test without tax disc.

You cannot get tax online (or any other way) without valid MOT.

You can ring DVLA (0870 240 0010) or VOSA (0870 6060 440) who can check whether you currently have valid MOT. You will prob need to have your V5C Regstration Certificate with you if you ring VOSA, but not DVLA.

Garage only charge you £10 to re-print MOT, not to do search

Thanks all - especially JackieB for the url

    http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/html/home.html

I turns out that I do infact have a valid MOT that doesn't expire for several months (June). It seems that last year I had no MOT between Feb & June and the old MOT I found was that one that expired in Feb 07! So the MOT is now set in my Google Calendar as a repeating event.
