FTSE lower than in 1998?

I notice that the FTSE is trading at 1998 levels. Does this mean that despite all the doom and gloom, investing in shares now, is on balance a sensible idea?

Its certainly a better time to invest than 12 months ago. Whether we have hit bottom yet is unknown.
Whilst there is doom and gloom there is also some positives and it is those positives that have prevented it falling back further than it should have. Remember the tech stocks bubble burst saw around 45% drop on the FTSE. Currently the FTSE is down 20% on high point.
It could still go down to that level. It may not.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. Today's stock market prices (both FTSE and Dow) have absolutely not priced in a recession: "The market is cheap" - I don't believe it for one secondBLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

It's a lot better than buying at 6700 a few months back.
Whether now is the bottom, only a psychic can say.0 -
In April they'll go up, as everyone starts investing in their new ISAs
Yeah....I've heard all the SWF's are sitting on their hands just waiting till the ISA season starts 'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -

One reason it may have some truth in it of course is because stockholders tend to believe it has some truth; and it's belief that drives markets.0 -

Whatever some may say no one really knows ... However IMO the Dow still has some way to fall, how far who can say but fall it will i feel , This will have at the very least a Dragging effect on the FTSE , If it were my money I would hold fire without a shadow of doubt.... anyone agree ??0
