Old Severn bridge toll
Comments

As there are two separate crossings, can I assume that each crossing is a one-way crossing or will I have to choose?
And quit knocking Wales!!!0 -
Each bridge is bi-directional and bi-lingual (the signs are in English and Welsh at both ends) The one you use will probably depend upon which motorway that you are using, M4 or M48. I wasn't too impressed, it was a bit scary for me, all that water and waves, I had to close my eyes half way across and change my seat cover at the other end.
You'll have to pay when leaving England though whichever one you use.
Anyway, who is knocking the Welsh besides Anne Robinson, helen 21, Trafalgar and a few million others ? Certainly not me squire.0 -
so is coming back free both ways?0

The way I look at it is that you have to pay for quality ....2014 Target;
To overpay CC by £1,000.
Overpayment to date : £310
2nd Purse Challenge:
£15.88 saved to date0 -
Make sure you have cash! they don't take cards.
If you don't have the money, they won't take your address, they will shut ALL the barriers, they send a Range Rover with flashing lights tol come over to your lane, your barrier will raise, then they will escort you over a little bridge that takes you back the way you came NO EXCEPTIONS.
Us Royal Mail drivers use Tags, but if we forget to take one, they will turn us around, even though we spend thousands of pounds with them.Sponsored by Tesco Clubcard Points !!0 -
Can anyone hazard a politically correct guess as to why there is only payment due in one direction ? Don't let Gordon hear anything about this though as he might try to use this anomoly to extricate himself from impending black hole which everyone says he is approaching.0

I would have thought it is clearly money saving to only build one lot of toll booths, employ only one set of workers and also time saving for everyone concerned. Of course there will be some occasions where people are able to come into Wales and go back the other way (M50 or up through Chepstow etc.) but presumably the most traffic comes in through the east, including European trucks etc. heading for Wales & Ireland, and it's carefully priced to make it uneconomical petrol and time-wise (an hour plus extra on your journey).steady__eddie wrote:Can anyone hazard a politically correct guess as to why there is only payment due in one direction ? If you take a guess at the amount of cars, trucks etc. going through in the two or three minutes you take to cross over and guess how much money is coming in....
This is one subject that always makes my blood pressure rise...
I always ask for a receipt so I feel like I've got something for my £4.80, it usually includes on it an offer to get a reduced price on a coffee & cake which are already extornionately priced and has to be taken at the next services or similar.
Are you sure you weren't trying to drive through the estuary rather than cross the bridge?! :eek:steady__eddie wrote:I wasn't too impressed, it was a bit scary for me, all that water and waves, I had to close my eyes half way across and change my seat cover at the other end.Torgwen..........

Went down to S. Wales last week - M6/M5/M4. What a drag and didn't realise there was a toll until too late. Came back Sat on A449 through Monmouth, Ross-on-Wye.
As Tom_Jones says above, a fantastic road - beautiful scenery, dual carriageway, virtually deserted. I wish I'd gone down that way. A bit of a shock then, though, when you rejoin the M5/M6.0
