Sold my car! Think I've made a mistake with log book

Hello, I've sold my car yesterday. The person who brought it off me seemed very nice. Told me he was a trader and that I needed to fill in the trader bit and send it off and he would send off the log book. They claimed he needed to do this incase he sells it on quickly. He was very convincing.

Since then, at work i've been informed I've made a mistake and I should have sent off the log book and not just the trader bit.

Now i'm panicking. I didn't sleep last night through worrying about it.
How can i sort this situation out please? I have no contact number for the buyer.
I am so annoyed at myself.
I was just happy to sell it and that my kids weren't playing up too much while i was trying to discuss it with the men.

Thanks

Your work mates are wrong. As long as you inform DVLA that you have sold it, and give them the details you have, then i really wouldnt worry. I sold my car to a `trader` a while back and had the same doubts you had.I was also selling as my noisy kids were there so thought i might have made a mistake.I also felt i should have sent the other part (larger part not the little traders slip)instead of what i had sent. Within a week or two DVLA had written , thanking me for letting them know i was no longer the registered keeper.I think you have done the correct thing and I am sure it will be fine.

  • Yes, I think if you transfer the car to a trader or scrappy they take the document and you send the relevant slip to DVLA.
With a private sale, seller sends the document and buyer has the tear off slip.
DVLA will send a confirmation letter in each case to the seller. My daughter's just scrapped a car and i've just sold one and this is what happened.
If you don't get anything from DVLA in, say, three weeks then contact them to enquire.

    You did right thing.

You should get a letter from DVLA confirming disposal within 4 weeks of sale. If not received after 4 weeks give them a call.

If you are in doubt, just write a letter to the DVLA telling them and all will be fine.

When I sold my last car, the person buying it wanted to go to the local DVLA office the next day to put his private plate on the car. For this he needed the whole V5 so I rang the DVLA who told me that yes he needed the whole document but I still had a duty to inform them of the sale.

But a letter was just as valid as the bit of V5 document in their eyes.

The trader is correct, your friends are muppets. You would have filled in the yellow section and sent that off, correct? DVLA will then know it's gone to a trader and not add an additional keeper BUT also know you are no longer the registered keeper so no fines etc from that car will be sent to you.
