Now I know that Martin has already pretty much covered this in his article on fuel costs however whilst he recommends that we use cashback cards to save money. I have done some calculations to show how much your petrol would work out per litre when using a cashback card, as opposed to not using one at all.
Now as is everyone, I am utterly disgusted with the petrol prices and wanted to try anything to reduce my costs.
Firstly use the site martin recommended here to firstly find the cheapest station and with it the cheapest price
Now for my car which is a 1.25 Ford Fiesta zetec which takes unleaded it has a 40litre tank and with the average unleaded price being £1.07 this would cost me exactly £42.80 to fill up
40(litres) x £1.07(price) = £42.80
Now if I use Amex Platinum cashback card which pays back 5% then I would do the following
£42.80 - 5% = £40.66
Therefore the total cashback was £2.14
No I do the following to work out what amount I am effectively paying per litre when using the cashback card
£40.66 / 40(litres) = £1.01
So whilst implementing the use of a cashback card, I know that I can save 6p off every litre each time I fill up, in addition to using loyalty cards i.e nectar for example.
If we did the same with diesel (again for a 40 litre tank just for an example) the average price being £1.13
40(ltrs) x £1.13(price of diesel) = £45.20
£45.20 - 5% = £42.94
£42.94 / 40(litres) = £1.07 (so a saving of 5p per litre per full tank)
These savings will be the same for pretty much any fuel capacity and can be implemented for LPG as well, which is slowly being taxed to keep it in line with the daylight robbery of fuel. Hope everyone finds this as a useful example in some way.
Good luck!

I hope it's going to be better than the last blockade we left you to organise on your own. Was it something like 8 people nationally?0

"We" being who? And "you to organise" being who? I can only assume conor to be a disgruntled haulier
I made no reference to organising blockades, it is simply an opinion poll, i myself believe it wouldn't make a difference unless it held out for 3-4 months on a large scale, but even then amublances etc couldn't operate so I think I wouldn't be for that, dunno about anyone else.
So fyi, I've never mentioned blockades with the exception of a pollLive for what tomorrow has to bring, not what yesterday has taken away0 -
Why isn't there a " I disagree with blockades and am happy with the current levels of duty" option?0

I'm my opinion Fuel Blockades Dont work as you only get a few supports.
Why dont we boycot the big petrol companies like Total and Esso and use their compeditors. When there sales fall they will have to adjust their petrol prices as they are the dictators.
Motorway service stations Boycot, independant corner garages, boycot and use ASDA self service and Tesco (.05p off voucher) Morrisons and Sainsburys.
If everyone only used 1 named petrol station (in the real world) it would have a vast impact on the petrol price. All come to he who waits!
£14997.00 still to go by December 2008
Now £14325.00 17/04/080 -
Yet someone else who seems completely ignorant of the fact that no matter what the name is on the garage forecourt, it all comes from the same refinery in that area.
It won't matter diddly squat who you boycot unless you boycot them all because as long as you're still using petrol, the Shell, Texaco, Esso, BP and Conoco refineries still end up supplying it.0 -

half of your fuel price is tax,why are we taking money away from the companies, take it off our thieving government....work permit granted!0 -

I am sorry Andy, I didn't realise there was any person in the UK that is actually happy with the current level of duty on fuel, or the levels for the past three years for that matter. If there is/are then I can only assume that these people are content with wasting money ergo I doubt that such Money Wasters would be on the site. Otherwise it would be the MoneyWastingExpert.com forum. Don't get me wrong or misquote me of course, there are a namely few whom love the duty levels of fuel.....Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling.
A funny revolt would be......
We should call on all MS'ers (potentially 4 million people) to fill up their tanks on a set day and set time then just drive off and not pay, us been the thieving swines for a change. Do you think they (the government) would sucessfully convict 4 million people for it? Probably not, would be funny though, but I don't think it's quite the way forward. After all the government hates thiefs and competition.Live for what tomorrow has to bring, not what yesterday has taken away0
