Recording lectures

  • OK OK OK, I've posted loads already but I looked for the microphone box tonight:
It's a "YOGA". It comes with a massive extension cable, little flat stand and bracket to connect to a video camera.

The minidiscs are Maxell. They come in 5 colours (2 of each in a pack) for about £8. Very durable, good cases, cool plastic box!

A lecturer (Dr. Breen) from Aberystwyth's Physics dept. (where I recently graduated from) has been recording his lectures on his iRiver for while now. They're then made available to all the students through the student blackboard service.

He did a trial of this and found that attendance went up and the students thought it was great as they were able to use it as a revision aid and a memory jogger for work after the lectures.

Someone in America recently claimed to be the first to use Podcasting for academic purposes, but Dr. Breen (who was my final year project supervisor) started academic Podcasting a long time before.

I think the Uni is considering expanding the idea into other departments, which would be great.
    Boo!
  • Son is getting a dictafone from Uni to record lectures as part of his learinng support package, or alternatively he can take his brand new Applemac lap top (that he is also getting out if his disabled student grant!) in if he prefers to make notes - it is loaded with a note taking programme and a voice recognition programme to help him as he is dyslexic (he has dispraxia). He is doing an art and design course and there are a few dyslexics on it apparently, so I think the lecturers he will get are used to them!!

However, when I did my business degree recently (the hard way - part time whilst working full time) our HR lecturer went berserk when a girl tried to record his class.

BTW, if any of your kids / any of you can claim the disabled student's grant (for physical or learning disabilities) you should do so - it provides a fund of £11K over the duration of the degree which is not repayable to spend on things to help with the course - son just has to take in receipts and he gets the money back. Also he gets the Applemac lap top, printer and scanner, loads of software, the dictafone and loads of other stuff which is all his to keep plus he will get the entire course on CD ROM to help him at home. I had no idea this grant could be claimed for learing difficulties, but it can, so if you have one, claim it.

Unless people have diffulties in taking notes in lectures I really see no need in recording lectures, personal view though.

Lectures are there to double check reading you should have already done. Lecture nots are not supposed to be comprehensive (sp?) reams of paper, just notes on areas the lecturer thinks are important.

However this is just my own personal view.

If you need blank MiniDiscs, Currys / Dixons had got an offer on a couple of months ago on packs of 10 Sharp discs. They were priced up at £5.99, but if you ask about a Buy One Get One Free offer, they find this on the till and you get an extra free pack. I bought 10 packs as I'm going to be using them for a radio course I'm starting in October.

Take a look on Ebay for mics as they have some Sony stereo mics at good prices. There is also a Beyer mic, the MCE 494 that is designed for connection to laptops and minidiscs. I don't know what it is like from a distance, but Beyer are a professional audio company.

I could start going into the technical and the expensive, but it is probably a little bit too much to go on about here.
