Wired connection

My mum has for the first time decided to get broadband installed. Has sided with Tiscali but i won't go into that. Anyway she has just received the speedtouch 587 router. She is a bit concerned regarding securtiy so would prefer to go wired instead of wireless. It's been years since iset up a wired connection i have totally forgotten how to do it. I have a speedtouch modem that i received fom Tiscali about 3 years ago but the installation disk provided by tiscali is for wireless connection. Can anyone give me a bit of advice as to 1,2,3 steps as to how i go about this.I have a rj11 cable for attaching from junction box to pc.
Do i : connect rj11 to spliter and other end to modem and then modem to computer via USB?If this is right what do i do next?

Thanks

the RJ11 is from the adsl filter to the router.

Just to clarify, RJ11 is the connector, not the cable. For a wired network, you'll be running CAT5 cable between the router and the PC, and it'll be terminated in RJ45 connectors.

A bit of an anal thing to point out, but you're a little confused by the looks of it, and if you go to buy a cable or whatever it'll be a pain in the !!!! if you buy the wrong one. :)

edit: just re-read it and it sounds like you're thinking about using the usb modem instead of the router? Bad idea. The router will be far more stable than the crappy usb modem. I appreciate she's worried about security, but if you'll be running a wire anyway you may as well make it cat5 and just disable the wireless on the router.

just checked back of pc and doesn't seem to have ethernet slot. Does have slot that rj11 connector fits but know that rj45 is wider so will not fit. silly question but i take it solution is to go and purchase ethernet card and insert it or can i use rj11 connector cable from router to pc?
