Microwave care

My cheapy microwave is about 3 years old.
Unfortunately, the bottom of it has gone rusty and all the paint is peeling off which makes it very difficult to keep clean.
Up to now I have managed to shut the door and ignore it, but I looked inside this morning and it really is not nice!
So, I suppose I need to buy a new microwave as I'm not even sure if it's safe, let alone hygenic.
For those of you that have microwaves, do you have expensive ones or cheap ones and has anyone else experienced this "rusting" problem?
I only use the microwave for re-heating, so I don't need anything fancy.

Hi Jet,
Mine was a cheap buy of a 'branded' (which brand exactly escapes me at the moment!!) micro which I got from Costco at about 1/2 the price it was selling for in the shops (this was about 6 years ago).
Sorry - not much help on the cheapy machines side, but thought it might be an option worth considering.

Mine's cheap and cheerful, about thirty quid from comet. Three years old and still going strong...

Hi Squeaky,
What make is it?0 -
Jet, i was on the verge of making exactly the same post!!
Noticed a few weeks ago that the paint was bubbling and peeling at the top of mine, now theres bits of rust falling off. Noticed yesterday that the same is happening under the plate.
I think im gonna get a new one coz it doesnt seem safe to me to have the possibility of rust falling in the food.
BTW mine was a cheapie £30 job.....its about 2 years old. The last one i had was the same and it blew up after 2 years. Maybe they are a false economy, might go for a more expensive one this time!

coffeeandfags,
That's exactly what I was wondering.
I've put up with the rust for a while now. As the rust is at the bottom of the microwave, I convinced myself there was no way it could get into the food. But now I'm wondering if it's safe to have peeling paint fumes and rust in the air when the food is cooking. Yuk!0 -

My mum gave me her old microwave when I moved into halls, and that started to peel and rust, then eventually it started 'blue' sparking and shorted itself out, and almost caught on fire - I think its the metal that starts to come through and thats never a good idea in a microwave, the paint is to protect the metal!
I'd recommend getting another one, and quickly. Also, ive found that its best to dry out a microwave after useage if there is a lot of steam in there, I think thats what caused the bubbling and peeling initially. Keep a kitchen roll by it and give it a quick wipe to dry it after use!

My cheapy has a fan in it which keeps going until a sensor says the air inside is dry.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. My cheapy microwave definetly doesn't have a fan. I'm definetely going to look out for one next time as I'm not sure I would have the self discipline to dry it out everytime!0
