ntl charge for engaged message

I'm an ntl/virgin media customer and to let other customers know that when u phone any other phone which is engaged virgin media play an automated message informing u of this because as educated individuals we dont understand what the engaged tone means ( sorry for the sarcasim ) and they charge us 9p for the privalage for having this redundant service. Ive currently contacted them about this and after quite a lot of effort finnally have a manager investigating this issue. I have also been told I'm the only person in the UK to have complained about this. has anybody else experienced this. I have also made investigations into the matter with all the results pointing to virgin media. So for every engaged call virgin media make money, how much money have they removed from u without u knowing

I believe this is the same for all telephone operators.

If you get the engaged tone, then this is free. If the person you are phoning has the 1571 service set up so that the caller can leave a message when the phone rings out or is engaged, then you are charged a connection fee.
Whilst my posts do not constitute financial advice, I am always, without fail, 100% right! :D

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • I take ur point about the 1571 service but with ntl even when u phone other ntl customers who dont have the service u get charged and if u phone the same numbers using a different provider ( bt talk talk ect) u recieve the engaged tone and no charge. I am currently still waiting for ntl to get back to about this but they have offered me a refund fot 20 such call made last month this leads me to believe they know about this issue and are generating the message themselves to extort money from peoples accounts. I will keep u updated as soon as they get back to me cheers

You shouldn't be getting charged for hitting an engaged number.

I'm with VM and are not charge for hitting engaged numbers.

BT have been playing the message for years to say the number is engaged.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)
  • I total agree I shouldn't get charged for an engaged number but I get a fully itemised bill and can trace as far back as june 2007 were I have been charged. they used to charge 6p connection now its 6p connection and 3p for the first min even if u hang up before the message kicks in. still awaiting response from ntl/vm.Sujest people check their bills to be on safe side
    cheers
  • Quick up date ntl/vm still avoiding my calls and inquiries but the automated message played at time of engaged tone has mysteriously disappeared have checked numbers we did investigation with and now only getting engaged tone how strange is that. I am still waiting for conformation of this from their manager I spoke to but it would seem victory is mine.
