Volkswagen Beetle 1.6 any good???

hi all,
We are considering buying a 2001 Beetle, 1.6. We currently have a 1999 Nissan Micra, and though it is not a 'cool' car, it has good boot space and the rear seats are spacious. But long journeys are not comfortable and we don't enjoy driving it any more. Any opinions on the Beetle - on the size and handling? Whatcar.co.uk did not give the Beetle a glowing review. I am looking for opinions of people who have been in/used this car -is it practical? Any advice?
