Ah, just noticed, matthewgood.org redirects to https://www.matthewgood.org; Suspect possibly the redirect to the www. part is the bit that's failing (and maybe not at your end). Try it with the www. bit in instead of leaving it out.
I've tried both ways and sadly get the same problem with both
Actually when I try to access teh website I tend to do it with the www in front as that's how it is in my browsing history, but when it doesn't work I'll try without as well. 0 -
Vista blocks writing to c:\ , some security software blocks writing to hosts, try search cmd, right click it, run as admin, then launch notepadEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

I think I may have done it .... I changed the hosts file permissions and added the change and it worked. Of course that may still be a fluke, but it's hopeful. I wonder if it's a permissions thing somewhere else on the laptop that's causing the problem. It's crazy that I'm an administrator and yet it was only checking my User level priviledges when working out if I could save the file or not.
Thanks again for all your help - I'll keep you updated.0 -
Don't know why you cannot write to those files. If you are an administrator then you should have full access...
Try a command prompt and use the dos editor and edit HOSTS that way? (he says hoping you know how to use dos?)A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.0 -
It was very odd, I used my administrator access to give all users full access to the host file and then I could edit it ok - there's something not right about that. It's a good job too as my dos knowledge is limited to running commands, I would have no idea how to edit a file from there.0
