Hi all
when we had the last storm (a week ago approx) some felt blew off my garage roof (flat roof with slight incline to the side), I thought thar rather than claim on my insurance I would just a get a roofer around to fix it, got a quote quickly but he hasnt been able to do the job yet due to the winds, anyway last night it rained quite heavily and water has now started to leak through into the garage roof and into the playroom which is part of a garage extension. I guess my question is will the insurance compaby still payout for this even though i didnt let them know last week about the initial damage or have I just shot myself in the foot?
thanks
Jim

you have upto 90 days to report a claim so shouldnt be a problem.you could always not mention last weeks damage.0

Trouble is, Im always too honest.....besides the insurance company we use have that computer stress recognition programme that tells it when you are not telling truth...not sure if it picks up not telling the whole truth though
thanks, will give them a call tomorrow0 -
actually does anyone know if this roof type is always covered???? a neighbour has just asked if it is covered as they didnt think it would be? When I took out the insurance they asked what roof the house had but not the garage??0

they would have asked about the property as a whole - whilst you may have 90 days regarding claims, you need to consider that it is your responsibility to ensure that you do all that you can to prevent a claim getting worse.
Regarding felt roofs different insurers will cover/not cover them, it will be listed in your policy booklet. more offen than not they ask if the property is of standard contruction - brick built sloping tiled roof, then if a flat roof is mentioned they question the percentage of the total roof that the flat roof covers.0 -
who are you insured with?
if they do cover flat roofs they will send an assessor to verify that the roof has been maintained to a good standard.0 -
magicdamo, we are insured with halifax, has been maintained well, no problems with it in the last 7yrs in which we have lived here.
steve, nothing in the policy document about flat roof?, never intended to claim, when the felt blew off in the winds we thought we take the opportunity to get the whole roof re-felted but the guy couldnt do it because of the winds and last night it rained for england and hence the leak, the claims line is not open today so havnt been able to take any steps to stop it getting worse today0 -

Might be worth trying to put some tarpulin up on it for tonight incase it gets any worse0 -
Just be cautios about the roof. Flat felt roofs are generally covered but only up to 5 years. Check the small print in the policy. I know the policy we have covers the roof up to 5 years. Secondly, the roof must not exceed 75% of the overall roof area of the entire property.
Secondly, Steve is right you have a duty of care to mitigate the damage to your property by taking necessary steps to stop any further loss/damage to the property.0
