  • The RSPCA are great for insurance, very reasonable prices and 20% goes to help dogs and cats in their care. I'm not sure about for dogs, but for my cat, they were the cheapest too! Try a price comparison website.

pet insurance can be a bit of a minefield & it pays to choose wisely

if you go over to the Pets Board & do a search for insurance, you'll find lots of useful information that'll help you make the best choice for your situation

i agree as there are different types of policy's and cover

you need to ask yourself several questions

    1. what xs are you able to afford

    2. do you need a policy where the insurance company pays directly to the vet, or can you afford one that you pay out first and the ins co reimburses you

    3. do you want a "for life" policy where there is no limit on payouts for that illness during the life of the pet, even if it costs thousands (though when i was searching for my pup, there is very few of these around now) or wether you want a policy that pays out up to x amount for a particular illness (the rest you would have to cover) or do you want one that pays out up to x amount per year every year

    4. do you want/need third party cover - ie if the dog was to attack someone, or run into the road and cause an accident

    5. do you want an ins co that will pay out for advertising costs etc if your dog was lost or stolen

    6. do you want an ins co that is open to paying for "alternate" treatments, ie accupuncture, water therapy, dog behaviourists etc

most of all remember to go with a company that you are happy with and the policy is most suitable for you, as if you insure a dog, and it then develops an illness or an injury, you will have to stay with that ins co, as no other ins cos will pay out for a pre-existing illnes or injury that occurred prior to the insurance with then

you may also want to read martins article on pet insurance:

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/cut-pet-insurance-costs

also do you have papers for the pup? as if you do and you transfer it from the breeder to you, kennel club provide 6 weeks free insurance from when they receive the papers, also if you get the dog chipped some companies also provide a month free insurance

for us we decided that hsbc was the best for our needs, and pay about £14 a month

thanks, pet insurance is a minefield and the policies vary so much, which i found when looking for a policy for my german shep, we ended up getting quotes from 18 different insurance companies, and not two of them had the same terms/costs etc, in the end we wrote up the list of "must haves" (including the ones i posted in my previous post) and then decided which policy fitted our needs the best
