Confused about compost

Er, sorry to be slow, is there a gardening thread?

I need to know how to go about starting a compost heap - can it be done on a small third floor balcony? I read somewhere that a compost thingy has to rest on the ground, on soil - is this true?

I don't want to buy peat as it is unkind to endangered peat bogs and plus i can't afford bought compost.

Yes we have gardening threads which includes threads on composting and links to helpful sites.

They are in our organic Indexed Collection. You can findit in our "Indexed Collections" sticky at the top of the forum listing, or you can follow the clue in my signature any time you see it or...

..you can use the Indexed Collections link in the Blue Bar at the top of every page which looks something like this:-

thank you v.V. much, have now found all the info' I need. This site is marvellous, it should be nominated for a Queen's Award for Excellence or something.

Just one thing, I read that pee is good for the compost heap. Hmmm, can't quite see myself dashing cross-legged out to use the compost bin on a third floor balcony in full view of a huge inner-city housing estate

I dunno. You might get a few interesting offers.

My garden is overlooked so I pee into the upturned lid of the composter in the garage then take it outside.

A word of warning - composting can smell quite bad depending on what you put in it. Your neighbours may not appreciate it!

Or use a bucket indoors. The advice I was given many years ago was to dilute it four to one with water.

I used to soak once a month on my outdoor composter but now I have a bin I dose it once every three months because it stays moist without any help from me.
