Log on to Windows is annoying
Hope someone can help me. Im on Windows XP and have received updates the last couple of days. The first time I received the updates I restarted the computer and instead of being the only user there was another user added on (called mac something) which I deleted. Now when I restart my computer I get a "Log on to Windows" box each time. I don't enter a password and just click the "ok" button which then brings up my desktop as normal.
Is this something to do with the updates or just a coincidence? How do I stop this box appearing?

I've got Windows Update turned on and I haven't seen anything like this recently (or ever).
It sounds like it could be some form of malware - If I were you I'd go through the steps shown in the "stickies" at the top of the Techie section and scan to see if anything nasty has got in.0 -
Which Windows are you using?
In XP you go to Control Panel>User Accounts>Change way users log on or off
then just uncheck the box for Use Welcome Screen...To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -
hi beachbeth
I have Windows XP professional but I think its the same for the home edtion
if you go to start > settings> control panel> user accounts >pick a task > change way users log on or off and tick the "use the welcome screen option"
it does sound a bit odd this happened after your updates...
If you go into control panel > Add / remove programs and check the box at the top that says "show updates" you could remove the last ones installed and see how it is then?
Is all your anti virus up to date and firewall etc?
Hate to think someone has hacked your pc?? Unlikely but does sound strange!
If anyone else knows different pls correct me.
any probs pls shout!0 -
If I recall correctly (and my memory is a bit fuzzy on this). You cannot bypass some form of login screen if one of you accounts has a password (so the above suggestions could just make an old-style login box appear - depending on whether or not the new account that was created had some automatic password applied).
I seem to have quite a few automatically created accounts now by .net and other stuff.
If the above Control Panel suggestions don't work, you can also download TweakUI
It's a very tiny Microsoft program and one of the options is Autologin:

Except when that would just bring up a standard log in box!
If that does happen, you simply log in, go to run and type in "control userpasswords2", you then select the person you want to log into automatically and enter the password if required.0 -

From experience that situation has been known to occur on occasions most notably soon after a fresh XP install.
Your method may be equally correct all i did was note fact that method described in post No3 is the method i use and has 100% success rate from experience.0 -
Type this in the run command "control userpasswords2" without the "".
You will see a tick box, take the tick out.
Another way is to remove the new user that the update (Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806)) made.
I suspect you now have a new user NTnet or something like that.0 -

I believe it's Framework 1.x that causes this. Unless something needs it I'd uninstall Framework 1 if it's installed. I've never found any of the Framework updates to solve it so personally I have all the Frameworks except 1 installed. What's strange is that installing the same updates on two different systems (even from fresh install) can either successfully have Framework 1 without the login problem or with it no matter what you do. Talk about inconsistency."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Download Microsoft Tweak UI from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Install and run it, section "Logon"->"Autologon". Tick "Log on automatically", type your username and password, and click Ok.0
