Capital One v Shell Citi credit card - Cashback merits

Don't know if I should post this as a new thread but basically would like some help choosing between these cashback cards:

Capital One v Shell Citibank

I've dispensed with the AMEX card cos of acceptance issues - simplicity is it for me.

The capital one card is attractive because of the idenity theft thing and free credit report but shell gives a good deal on petrol (I generally buy petrol from them only anyway).

Cheers.

I guess it depends on how much petrol you buy.

The capital one identity think is nice but 2 credit reports would only cost £4 anyway so don't over value it.

I have purchase protection (against loss damage) for free with my capital one card but they change their cards all the time so I couldn't say whether that it current.

Basically you need to compare how much you personally will use the various benefits.
There is no point having loads of benefits if you can't use them, so look at their applicability to you.
  • Thanks!

I buy petrol like any other car owner. Last year I was doing up to 2000 miles/month - wish I had joined this site sooner!!

This year I'll be surprised if i do anywhere near 2000 miles.

    Thanks again!

  • Sorry to resurrect this old thread but i thought i'd add to this rather than create a new one.

I just realised that the Shell Citi Mastercard is not a real "cash back" card but more of a "rebate on your Shell fuel purchase" card.

The cashback is only applied to future Shell fuel purchases and not cold, hard cash paid into your account?

Can't believe I didn't understand this ages ago - and no, I'm not dumb! :p

    owitenmisermusa,

You got this confused. I got a Shell credit card and I get a rebate off my credit card bill. Thus the cashback is taken out from your outstanding balance the following month.

    For example; month 1 - you spend £100 on fuel (3% = £3.00 cashback) and £200 on shopping, paying bills etc (1% = £2.00).

Month 2 you get you statement of £500.00 and you pay the balance in full and it will state that that you will get a rebate of £5.00 next month.
You then spend the same money again; you spend £100 on fuel (3% = £3.00 cashback) and £200 on shopping, paying bills etc (1% = £2.00).

Month 3 you get your statement but there will be rebate of £5.00 so you balance will be £495.00. And you have accurred this months rebate of £5.00 and will recieve next month £5.00.

The limitation is when you earn more cashback then the fuel you buy in a statement period so it will forwarded on to the following month. But you will still get it as long as you buy Shell fuel.

Any questions just ask on the forum.
