Who can I believe?

Options
Last week I went to a price comparison site to see if I could get a better deal than my current one with British Gas (for gas and electric)
I put in my exact usage for the last year, and it indicated that E-on would save me just under £300 a year for the next 3 years. so I switched.
Last night, British Gas rang me, as good as told me that this was a load of rubbish, no way could E-on save me anywhere near that much, and offered me £25 to stay with them!
Question is, who do I believe?

  • E.on have a tariff which is called Energy Guarantee - which guarantees to be cheaper than Biritish Gas until 2009. You may not be saving quite £300 from switching to E.ON, but it will deffinately be cheaper than British Gas. If in doubt, compare unit prices.

Nobody can answer your question, without knowing your consumption and your postcode.

However I agree with BG it is extremely unlikely that you will save £300 a year unless your bills are huge.

Also how on earth could anyone predict savings 3 years ahead.

Bear in mind that the sole objective of the comparison websites is to get you to change so they get their commission.

Also bear in mind that when websites and Utility companies compare their prices with British Gas, they always compare with BG's Standard Tariff(and often disregard discounts for dual fuel, Direct debit and paperless billing) - so look at the small print.

BG's Click 5 internet account is very competitive - but they never use that tariff in their comparisons.

    Hi,

E.ON's Energy Guarantee only guarantees to be cheaper than British Gas' standard tariff.

E.ONs Energy ONline Extra Saver (which generally comes out on top on the comparison sites is on average £111 cheaper than BG's click 5 according to E.ON's website.

My advice would be to check your unit prices against E.ON's, use a few different comparison sites and to be on the safe side do some manual calculations as well:D

The manual calculations part is very important. Going on the comparison websites, I put in my usage using accurate consumption figures in kWh. Every site said E-On was the cheapest so off I went to them. I stuck my figures in the E-On calculator and it said it would be £60 a year MORE than I was paying for British Gas.

Personally, I don't trust a single one of them and I'm getting sick of the whole rigmarole. The savings are more like pennies for anyone who is on monthly DD with paperless billing and it's not worth the aggro of the "checking comparison sites only to find manual checks show different" cycle.
  • Today I went on 3 comparison sites and they all recommended Eon as being the best, price wise, at £703/annum for gas and electricity (paperless billing, monthly DD). I am currently paying £890. I had worked out my usage in Kwh for the last 12 months, 2 meter readings 14-3-07 and 17-3-08.
Being very sceptical that Eon were cheapest I rang them and B/Gas.
Eon wanted to sign me up there and then (said if I changed my mind I could cancel in 14 days) and guaranteed to be cheaper than B/Gas for gas at 6.4p and 2.70p. Obviously said no, still to speak to B/Gas, thank you.
B/Gas also 6.4p and 2.70p and no pressure to sign up.
    Quoted at: Eon for gas £28.33, electricity £48. Total £915.96/annum. (+ £25.96).
    B/Gas for gas £32 and electricity £36. Total £816.00/annum. (- £74.00).
This is taking into account discount for dual fuel, monthly DDs, online at Eon, paper bills at B/Gas. And the fact that the B/Gas man gave me an extra 10% off the electricity, £40 down to £36.
Interestingly both are way over the figure of £703 (from Switch with Which, Uswitch and EnergyHelpline).
    I'm glad I checked. The difference is £100 over a year. :D
So if anyone is switching, please take the time to ring up and check.
