Problem with Win ME?

In the last couple of weeks I've started to have some peculiar problems.

1. MS Word is totally locking up the system when I try to open (any) document file. I can create a file and save it ok but when I try to open it, bang. They read ok with Openoffice so there is nothing wrong with the files.
The only way out is a powerfail reboot.

2. Scandisk appears to get in a loop and again won't let me cancel it from itself or the tasklist (the task list will not even come up on screen after CTL/ALT/DEL just like Word in the last para). That's really great after being forced to shut the system abnormally so the next time you start you get scandisk......

I've started in safe mode and scandisc works ok so I've done a full scan including surface check on the HDD. I've even tried a defrag followed by another scandisk just in case there could be a doubtful sector on the disk.

I've done my usual virus and spyware checks. Nothing shows up.

Any suggestions as to what to do next would be gratefully received!

PS Today I've even lost my broadband access for no apparent reason. I'm beginning to get paranoid. :) Thank heaven for the local library.
Nice to save.

I would guess a corrupt office file and do a re-install or repair from add/remove, control panel.

What anti-virus software do you have?

How are you opening the Word doc? Are you opening it from within Word or by double-clicking the file from Windows Explorer? Or doesn't it matter and your system locks up either way?

    I've been Money Tipped!
    URK - ME?????

I had to get XP last year as i was getting similar problems to yours and the only thing to do was a complete re-install as there was some weird stuff going on in my registry.

Do a backup and get a copy of XP.

Thanks for the replies. I always suspected that Win ME was named because of it was so similar to Myalgic Encephalomylitis. Certainly gives me chronic fatigue syndrome.

I'll be moving to XP at some time but want to delay having to move all my data so I'd like to solve this in ME.

I use AVG free edition with Spybot, Adaware and Spyware Blaster. I think Word hangs either way although I'm sure it hangs if I open the file from the dropdown menu within Word. I've stopped using Word as it's such a pain as scandisk also screws up so the only way out is by powerfail restart then into safe mode and run scandisk from there as that works OK.

I'll try the reinstall route and let you know if it works. I want to get this note off before I risk hanging the system again.

Hey, I've even got my broadband back. Neither BT nor isp will admit to having changed anything but my final reboot of ME for the day gave it back. My has it been a pain to lose it for over 24 hours.
    Nice to save.

    drlight,

Removed and reinstalled Word. That now works ok but that in its turn threw up some other issues. However, at least I've got rid of that source of irritation.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
