Hey guys!
Need some help...
My OH got a ticket throught the post stating he was speeding, thing is he was at work and his car was at home... He had relatives down from abroad and he is assumng someone had taken his car!!

Now to make things even worse they were snapped at 89mph in a 70mph zone!! he has never had points on his license and he is fumming
The letter states that it was done using a gun, do they take a front shot so we can ascertain who was driving? also if we tell them that they were from abroad what are the repercussions on him.

We don't know what to do...
Any help :)

Does he have any proof of where he was at the time his car was speeding - witnesses, e-mails, phonecalls etc - if he can prove he wasn't the driver I don't think he can be charged BUT I would think he would have to try to provide assistance in identifying who was. Does a handheld gun take a picture of the driver or just the number plate?
;) If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!

I would be reporting it to the police. They may be relatives from abroad but they have to face the consequences if they really did take the car without consent. Did they have access to keys?

    Take a look at https://www.pepipoo.com.

It's a pretty good site for all things relating to motoring and the law. 'specially speeding!

i would supply the information/proof you were not driving at the time.
then wait and see where the police go from there

The old "friends/relatives from abroad were driving but they've gone back now" excuse.

THINK VERY VERY CAREFULLY WHERE YOU GO FROM HERE.

You pursue this line. The Police will ask you if they had your permission. If you answer:
    1) no, they would expect you to report the vehicle as TWOC which means the relatives could be liable for arrest if they came back to the UK;
    2) yes, you may be asked for proof that they were insured to drive the vehicle and if you cannot provide this, may be charged with allowing the vehicle to be driven without insurance which is 6 points.

The thing is, no matter how genuine you may be, the relatives/friends from abroad excuse has been misused so many times, the Police then just do the above to let you drop yourself in it even more. If you persist in using these excuses and they find proof you were lying, you can then end up in prison for perverting the course of justice as a few people have found out recently.

If the car was where you left it when you went to work you wouldn't necessarily suspect that someone had taken it "without owner's consent."

is there some reason he can't just ask the relatives if they did take the car out?
