Anybody who blithely follows the advice given in the Highway Code without due consideration to what is actually happening around them, is an idiot.
Maybe I should use CAPITALS to drive home that POINT.0 -

Doesn't justify the INCORRECT use of a ROUNDABOUT though, does it??
(Did you mean like THAT?)British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
The Highway Code is like any other Code of Practice or similar that is issued by a government dept or similar organistion. It offers advice and guidance and in some instance states the statuatory and/or regulatory position.
Such advice and/or guidance can and will be relied upon by a Court in order to establish liability, negligence and the like. Basically, unless you can demonstrate to the contrary why you had good and exceptional reasons as to why you chose to ignore that advice and/or guidance then you will be found to be liable for the consequences of your actions or inactions.
Do not think that because the Highway Code is not a Statutory Document that it has no effect. It has.
And, also remember, that it suits insurance companies to go knock for knock. They get two lots of NCB taken off, increase premiums and make a nice little earner out of both sides.0 -

In knock-for-knock, how insurers pay out?
Is it that each pays to their own client? In that case what happens if someone has comprehensive but other party has 3rd party only?
Or each insurer pays for other party's damage?Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -
My pet hate is idiots that use the left lane to turn right. It happens frequently at the roundabout at the end of my street. Because of traffic flow there are always more cars in the right hand lane waiting to turn right, so idiot who cant be arsed to wait will always come up the left hand lane and turn right.
It annoys me greatly and Ive nearly been hit several times by other drivers doing this. My husband always reckoned Insurance companies go knock for knock on roundabouts though so I dont be awkward and block the fools as they turn0 -
The highway code is clear on this and has been clearly illustrated by previous posters. The key message for me in all this is to use the well worn expression, assume every other driver is an idiot. On roundabouts the most common frustrations are drivers who use the wrong lane (or drive in the middle of the two), people who don't indicate and the most relevant in this case, drivers who see the roundabout as an opportunity to get past by undertaking and cutting people up. So use all your mirrors and always be prepared to get out of the way. A momentary loss of pride from losing a battle on the road is much preferable to fighting with insurers. Don't get angry, just smile and bask in the glow of your superior driving skills.0
