Hostels - What are they like to stay in

I am off to a German City later this year and decided to save a bit of money and stay in a hostel for the one night I am there (£30/night city center) instead of a hotel room at around £200-300/night (miles from city center).

What are these hostel places like, in terms of kind of people using them and tips (are they full of drunks and do I need to sleep with one one eye open?)

My daughter stayed in one in Berlin a couple of years ago and said it was lovely.

That sounds like an awful lot of money for one night in a hotel, especially since you say it is miles from the city centre anyway.

If you are worried about a hostel have you thought of looking for a traditional German Gasthaus (guesthouse)?

Where and when are you going?

Dusseldorf, at start of June (7th), Dusseldorf is not usually this busy, but every 4 years there is a very big fair, where nearly 1/2 million visitors come over. getting rooms is always fun, Some are booked years in advance, Last time the room I stayed in was 450 euro/night (3* hotel). There are cheaper options, and you can get decent cheaper rooms but people I know sometimes have to drive an hour or so away 80km plus for these. As I am just staying the single night this time (paying off my own back this time) wanted to be in the center of town as I would not have my car this time.

    Aaah, I see.

If you haven't already seen it there are reviews for some hostels here:

    http://www.hostelworld.com/Hostels/Dusseldorf/Germany/Reviews/

also other reviews if you google 'review of dussledorf hostel'

Have a nice time, I used to live fairly near to Dusseldorf, its a lovely city ;0)

We stayed in several youth hostels in Germany last summer http://www.jugendherberge.de/en/ and found them to be very good. Some were fairly basic, some rooms had an ensuite, but all were clean and comfortable. I am not sure whether the city hostels will be the same, but the people using them tended to be young people or families - certainly no drunks!

Are you in a dorm or private room?

If the latter, you will be fine. If not then i'm sure you'll still be fine, but take some ear plugs and an eye ,mask because chances are you'll get woken by people drunk coming in (or people sh*gging) etc....

I once stayed in the Kronach Youth Hostel (Bavaria) in the old Fortress "Feste Rosenberg". No drunks, except a couple of us. If I remember correctly there was a curfew. Dorm, no ensuite, baps for breakfast every morning and dishwashing duty one of the nights. Good life experience :)

A dorm room :( thankfully I have the right to cancel outside of 48hrs, will keep an eye out for a cheap hotel, but as I will probably out in the center of town that evening and probably a bit merry my self, I think the hostel is my best bet, not worth the 200-300 of quid the other city center hotels are charging

Sorry if I put you off Hagar, I didn't mean to as its really not that bad, especially with all the money you will save.

The GF and I stayed in hostels all round the world for a year and most nights were fine, out of 365 nights, only a handfull were bad.

Like you say, if you are out yourself, you'll probably waking them up coming in....

End of thr day its only one night,,

If you're staying in a dorm you just have to be prepared for people coming in and out of the room when you're asleep, but on the whole people staying in hostels are considerate and try to keep the noise down. I've stayed in quite a couple of hostels and I've been really impressed with the standards. I on the whole I would recommend staying in a private room, but if it's only for a night or two then being woken up is something you can cope with. I've had problems booking through www.hostelworld.com before (they booked me in for the wrong month) but they do give good reviews for hostels and so do www.hostels.com.
