Unfortunately I'm in the same position.

Our cat was treated for urinary problems 9 months ago.
M&S were excellent - they paid out straight away and paid for his special food.

Unfortunately the new 'Premier' policy is more expensive and won't cover his food.

I've tried to get quotes from other insurers but they either won't cover him or premiums are incredible because of the pre-existing condition.

Its like M&S have trapped us into having to take out this more expensive cover.
Well I won't be trapped - its 'self-insurance' from now on!

It's probably worth a trip to the vet to get his opinion of likely future related costs before you cancel the policy, as once done you'll never get anyone else to cover that condition (as you know).

Remember that companies have a habit of relating conditions that don't appear related to us :) .

I have a Pug and M&S have paid for two leg operations and 2 eye operations last year with no excess. Plus they paid for petrol costs for travel to the eye specialists (a 45 minute drive away) and all the follow-up appointments. She has got to have eye ointment for the rest of her life which is £45 every 8-10 weeks and M&S has been paying for this so far.

If all this changes then she will have to have cheaper eye drops, but there is no way I can change insurers because this is a pre-existing condition now.

Just a quick note to say thanks for the comments, I did some research and have gone with AXA for my cat - fortunately I have have had no claims for him so it was an easy switch to make. I do have a £50 excess, but after that it is a lifetime policy with £7000 per year. I do still feel angry with M&S tho - I feel they have sucked people in with their supposed 'lifetime policy' and then moved the goal posts.
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.

    Me too!
  • Me three. I'm also wondering how many people won't realise the major change in policy with the disapperance of the no excess policy as there's no mention of it in the covering letter. Yes - it mentions policy changes but being offered a premier policy makes it sound as though it's better than the existing one. I know you should always read policy documents but I think this could catch a lot of people out.

I wonder if this is actually legal as the policy in force when you made the claim says that as long as you continue to pay the policy you are covered for this for the lifetime of the pet.

I am in a very similar position and wondered if enough people got together whether we could challange this.
  • I have two eight year old tabbies that used to be insured with PetPlan. They are both (touch wood) fit and well with no conditions at all. I moved to M&S as I was attracted by good costs, zero excess and no %. I am disgusted and appalled that the rug has been pulled out from under our paws but am unsure whether or not to go back to Petplan. I had a previous cat with them (RIP) who was very poorly and they paid without question for about three years but I have recently heard less than good reports. Could anyone recommend a good insurer that doesn't cost the earth?
mmmm, still seeking something witty to be my auto-signature . . . so this will have to suffice for now ;)

I'm currently with Sainsburys, I have just had a quote from AXA, slightly better policy and £20 cheaper.
  • Hi there
I used to be with M&S,for my dog until last year when they put the premiums up and put an excess on. I have since changed to online Healthy Pets, their website might be worth a visit
