Car Insurance hire claim - please help/advise

Hi
In November 2007, someone went in to the back of me and my car was written off. All liability was accepted and I got a cheque back ok for the 'value' of the car.
My policy didn't have either legal protection or a courtesy car included. I was told to lay out for the cost of a hire car then get reimbursed from the person's insurance company who hit me.
I've received a letter telling me that they are only willing to pay up until the time that my insurance company issued the cheque to me for the car - actually, they allowed 2 more days for me to receive it.
I'm fuming at this, considering they should surely pay for the whole hire. The hire was about 3 weeks (including car going to garage, the whole dispute, me finding another car, and having to wait for the cheque funds to clear so I could purchase something else - which also included a weekend).
Any advice on where I stand on this? I didn't agree with this other insurance company on a time scale. It seems very unreasonable that they expect me to buy a car on the same day that I received the cheque.
Cheers
