Help with Gas Metre Calculations (Atlantic)
Options
Hi,
Yesterday th engineer exchanged my metre from pre-payment to credit metre. I have contacted Atlantic and according to there records I'm currently on Domestic standard.
The metre was installed around 1.30pm, I guess the metre reading at that time would have been 000. When I cam home the reading was showing as 00000874. Today I have checked it again at 18:30 and it is showing as 00011183.According to energylinx.co.uk the rates for the standard tariff are:-
Gas Units Costs
Primary Unit: 2.26 pence per kWh
Standing charge £ 11.27 per quarter
Can anyone please estimate how much would the above costed me?
Many thanks
MS

£2.95 inc Standing Charge:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
You only read the numbers surrounded in black on a new gas meter there would be 5 digits in black and 2 in red, the digits in black are the ones that matter. The last 2 will have a red surround or be red depending on manufacturer. If the meter is digital it will be the first 5 digits reading from left to right. The meter should also have a 3" square yellow sticker on the front stating the date installed and the opening reading. Taking this into account your meter is registering 8 units in the first reading and 111 in the second reading. The standing charge is £0.1238 per day + 111 units at £0.026 = £3.00 + 5% vat if not already included total £3.150

Ignore the last 3 numbers on your meter as they are just fractions of a cubic metre.
As your reading is now 00011, you have used 11 units (cubic metres) of gas.
A cubic metre of gas is approx 11.1kWh(it varies) so you have used 11 x 11.1kWh = 122kWh. So 122 x 2.26p = £2.76 and on top of that you add the 12p a day standing charge.
The quick way in future is to take each unit of gas as costing 25p and add the standing charge of 12p a day.
So if you use 200 units in a 30 day month it will cost £50 + £3.600 -
How did you calculated this figure?
You didn't ask for a worked calculation in your first post, only an estimate of the cost!
I calculated the cost using a similar method to Cardew except that this site calculated 11 M3 as 125 kWh. You will get a more accurate conversion figure, if you know the correction factor etc.You only read the numbers surrounded in black on a new gas meter there would be 5 digits in black and 2 in red, the digits in black are the ones that matter. The last 2 will have a red surround or be red depending on manufacturer. If the meter is digital it will be the first 5 digits reading from left to right. The standing charge is £0.1238 per day + 111 units at £0.026 = £3.00 + 5% vat if not already included total £3.15
So after explaining how to read only the first five digits, you then try to do your invalid calculation based on the first six digits!

The new cheapest gas is now showing as Npower - Sign Online v.10 - Paperless Billing at the followng rates:-

To give an example, 2 years ago I signed for SoL4 which at that time was the cheapest (just like SoL10). Now the comparison sites tell me that if I changed to SoL10 (which I cannot) I would save £163!
I have no bad examples of customer service but other posts on here tell a different story.0 -
Hi,
Do anyone think that it is worth it to change suppliers? I don't want to change then a month later I knew that Npowe are increasing proces on there online tariff.
Thanks

Frankly nobody knows the answer to your question; because nobody knows when any particular Utility company will change their prices, and by how much.
It also depends on how much gas you use.
Certainly lots of tariffs have cheaper gas prices than 2.77p/kWh and a quarterly charge.
All you can do is take a gamble like the rest of us.
Ebico for instance charges 2.55p/kWh for all consumption. However their prices are going to increase soon(between April and Sep it would appear)
Some of the internet only tariffs are also cheaper - and most of them have already increased their prices.0
