Free parking on west side of London? (Sunday)

I'll be going to London to stay for one night on Sunday of the bank holiday weekend, coming in from the west (M4/A4). Wondering whether it might possible to leave my car somewhere - ideally free, or very cheap and then get the tube in. (Inside/outside of the congestion zone wouldn't be a problem as it's not a weekday.) Would be grateful if anyone with local knowledge has any suggestions?
Many thanks for any replies,
Steve

Where about in London are you staying?
In Westminster, you can park on a single yellow line or at a parking meter for free on sundays and bank holidays. Be careful as other councils have different regulations.(".)0 -
Thanks for the reply geo555.
Westminster sounds OK but think we'll be parked there for a fair bit of the bank holiday Monday as well so if it's not free then we'd have a bit of a problem.
We're staying in the Holiday Inn in Oxford Circus but wouldn't mind parking a little out of the centre, so as to avoid having to drive into London - perhaps somewhere just off the A4 but near a tube station (in zone 1-4???) would be ideal?
I'm not a local so a street name or multimap link would be great!

I used to work in Chiswick, and there is plenty of free on-street parking very close to Chiswick Park tube - 5 minutes drive from the A4. Next stop in - Turnham Green, also has free parking around it, but is probably less easy if you donot know the area.[size=-2] If this post was unhelpful, please tell me.

Plenty of free on-street parking around Kew Gardens Station, well there used to be but must admit I havent used it since May so things might have changed, residents parking, meters etc. It's about a mile from M4 Junc 1. If you type Kew into the search box on multi map it will show you. Would put a link in but not sure how to do it. I would recommend the area around Wimbledon Park but a bit far from the M4.
A bit of general parking advice, common sense really but read any parking signs very carefully as clamping/ towing is very common and expensive in the London area.0 -
I am going to Harrods on next Monday as been invited to qvc gold day at 10am in morning can anyone suggest any good car parking around this area? As It is first time I have drove down. Thank you.0

Ok, now I have moved out of the area I feel safe to recommend this without the locals getting mad!!!
An ideal place to stop is in Ealing. If you park in a road called Woodville Gardens (check it out on multimap) http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=518000.836358956&Y=181000.054202647&width=500&height=300&gride=&gridn=&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=GB&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=0&scale=10000&right.x=3&right.y=90
(as close to the cricket pitch as you can) it is free parking on the road (or was a year or two ago) then you can walk down just one road (Haven Road) towards Ealing Broadway tube station. Alternatively you can park at the top end of Woodville Gardens and cross over the Hanger Lane on foot (pedestrian crossing) and get on to North Ealing tube.
Eitherway it is very easy and free!! If you park by the cricket pitch you can get to do spot the house of your dreams!

If coming in from the M40/A40 (Birmingham/Oxford) don't park up at Hillingdon - the first tube station you see - but continue down the A40 to Hanger Lane and park up in the nice leafy street called Ashborne Rd - and walk for 2mins to Hanger Lane tube.
Hanger Lane Tube/A40/Ashborne Rd
Benefits over Hillingdon?
1) Free Parking
2) Quicker Journey Time to Central London - Hanger Lane is on the Central Line unlike Hillingdon which is on the Met/Piccadilly.
3) Cheaper Tickets - Hanger Lane is in Zone 3, unlike Zone 6 for Hillingdon.sorry no links in signatures by site rules - Forum Team 20 -
You can park for free in most streets in Chiswick on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Turnham Green is in Zone 2, and takes around 20 minutes to get into central London! PM if you wasnt any specific street names!0

Just to say a big thanks to all of you, especially weedav whose suggestion I went with - very pleasantly surprised to be able to park for free so near to a zone 2 station (Turnham Green).
Cheers,
