Well, my usual Sainsburys arem't selling at the discounted price and didn't know why other stores were and they weren't!

Thanks for the info about DAB, hadn't realised that it is such a minefield

 Forgive my ignorance but is 'Pure DAB' different to 'DAB'?

If you have the time you might find this thread of interest :

To cut a long story short.... not many people who have 'Pure' brand radios have complaints about sound quality. Just because a radio is DAB doesn't make it a good radio.
  • Many thanks searcher2, I'll be sure to read this thread and thanks for the advice too. :)

The selling point for me is 5 live not on dodgy AM reception - well at 29.99 it would be anyway ;)

This also applies to Talksport and Capital Gold and other AM only stations on a normal radio. The quality of these broadcasts on DAB is far superior than on AM/MW/LW radios.

If you live in a poor reception area, then make sure you buy a DAB radio that supports an external aerial socket. (normally the telescopic aerial will unscrew to reveal an F-connector).

A general guide is that if your TV reception is poor without an outdoor aerial, then DAB will not be that good either, apart from the BBC channels which are always stronger than any others.

ANYWAY - anyone name some sainsburys branches that are doing this 29.99 price?
  • The Sainsburys in Coldhams Lane, Cambridge is selling it at this price and I purchased one at the end of last week. It's lovely and sounds great - such a good buy! (I already own a 'Bug' but wanted another DAB radio for the kitchen...)
  • I would also make sure that you can get DAB in your area, as there are still lots of areas without it, which for the person with DAB in their car is a bit bad.

I purchased one of these yesterday at the Sainsbury's in Stoke-on-Trent.
Only seemed to be a couple left, so that forced my hand a bit.
I'd previously bought the Matsui, at Curry's which was only a tad more at
    £34.95.
I was quite impressed with the little Matsui, if you're in a decent area for DAB
the range of programmes is a bit of a revelation, especially if you're into
    the MW stations.

I thought my Mum would like the set so I gave it her, and since then I've been
looking to replace it. Curry's managed to put the price up by an tenner in the January "Sales" so was looking for another "bargain basement" set.
This seems to be the cheapest on the market at the moment. On the whole
quite impressed, though on very low volume there does seeem to be slight hum from the unit, and other reviews seem to confirm that it's not just my unit.
The tiny push button controls look functional, but are a bit fiddly and mean you have to hold the unit to actually get some purchase, on them. The volume control has no visible scale on the display, which is also a little disappointing when trying to judge what volume is satisfactory.
Also the speaker is not so good as the Matsui.

On the plus side it's both mains and battery powered, looks a smart little set
and under 30 notes it's a bit of a bargain!

On the whole I'll probably keep it, because it's a portable, but probably think
my first purchase was a better unit all round.

    Hope this helps,

    Harry

P.S contrary to previous comments, although not perfect
DAB I believe is a big improvement, certainly on the MW stations.
