Can anyone help, have damp in the boot of my car and the windows are always wet when i get in in the morning. Think we've found where the water had been getting in and fixed it but the windows are still steaming up and the boot smells of damp, when you sit on the seats they feel wet. Anyone any ideas on how to dry it out and get rid of the damp smell

I had the same problem a few years ago on a second hand car I brought.

The only way I could do it was lots of driving around with the heater on full and the windows open on dry days.

Allso I used a dry towel everyday to wipe down all the windows, then remove it from the car to dry in the house overnight.
This will keep taking a lot of water out of the car.

It took me about a month to get the car comfortable (it was december so I had a lot of dry frosty days).

Place a bowl of rice in the boot, then remove it allow it dry out in the home and then place it back

When you get the opportunity (and if possible) leave the doors open and just let the air circulate. Temperatures are probably not high enough just yet but as the days get warmer it should improve (this assumes you have found the leak).

    have you got a sunroof?
as my previous car had a sunroof that had a leak if it rain too long, then for days/weeks it would leak all over the drivers seat.... many a day i got to work to feel as though i had wet myself. so i took to driving whilst sitting on a towel, then when the dryer weather was around, left windows open as suggested, this eventually dried out the sunroof seal and problem went away...... especially when the car failed its mot last summer..... haha
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

Wait until summer is the only real advice. Yeah you can go through all the advice above but it's only going to be once it gets to summer and you can leave it baking in the sunshine that it'll dry out fully.
  • Remove all carpets and soft materials from the car and dry them out in the home.

If you have an electric fan heater, a low setting left on in the car for a few hours can help so long as you leave adequate ventilation.

If you have a spare wheel well, check the bottom of that, you may have a swimming pool that needs to be removed by soaking up with a towel and wringing out.

I had the same problem when I got my car. Here is how I managed to sort it (well not 100%, it still gets slightly damp after heavy downpours, but no swimming pool has re-appeared).

Removed carpet from boot (luckily found folding seats forward enabled the whole carpet to be removed and taken into house for drying/vacuuming), folded down rear seats, closed boot, poured water all over it, quickly crawled into the boot through the rear seats and tried to identify source of the leak. Found it appeared to be coming in through the bottom weather seal. Applied some of that stick on bathroom sealant (the stuff in a roll) to the metal of the boot lid such that this would contact the weather seal. If doping similar clean this area well first to promote adhesion.

I then gently cleaned the weather seal of the boot and sprayed silicone oil over it. Silicone oil is going to be 99p a can soon in Lidl, which is a cheap price so stock up while you can. It's also good for sunroof seals and door seals etc.
  • If you've cured the leak dry the car out by simply leaving one window down very slightly, say 5mm, for a couple of days. The smell should dissapear as it dries out. Its amazing how much airflow this will produce and it will maximise the effect of increasing the in car temp compared to outside which helps sped up the process more :)

as said above get every carpet out of it including the boot carpet, dry out the spare wheel well if applicable.
and get thousands of those little silca gel bags you get in new shoe boxes and a bottle of febreeze!
    ...work permit granted!
  • Do you have a sun roof? There's drain pipes that run from the sunroof down towards to back of the car, usually by the back lights or the rear bumper - check that these are not blocked as they can fill up if they are...
