If you are looking for reuseable cups and plates, then Ikea is the place to go - £1 for 6 pieces in the kids section, and it'll go in the dishwasher. For throw-away, then the pound/discount shops are usually the best - normally paying £1 for 20 paper plates or 60-100 plastic cups.

For food - I scan the supermarket specials and reductions for long-life stuff like crisps, drinks etc as soon as I know the party is on. For short life like bread, meat, cheese and salads, leave it until closer the time - anything that will freeze you have a month on, anything that won't, you only need to be shopping a day or so in advance, but you could get some good bargains (just did a little tea for my 2 year olds birthday - got everything bar some of the cheese on half price either through specials or short date reductions - could easily have catered a full party with the same deals).

For teenagers though, pizza etc might be an easy option - I have heard some say it's been just as easy and cheap for them to do a bulk deal with the local pizza place and chippy as it would be to buy, store and cook loads. Then all they've had to do is provide drinks and sweet.

  • I recently did a kids party. I used pitta breads that are about 26p for 5 added a little passata to each one then grated cheese. Grill them for a couple of mins and they make great little pizzas, i reckon it would cost about 3 quid to make enough for 50 kids, if they ate 1/2 a pitta each.
