credit rating and bank accounts

went into natwest to open a basic account on saturday only to be told with my credit rating the computer was offering me a advantage gold account the best account they offer.

Im confused

i have been with halifax for ten years and i cant even get there basic current account
I always thought that my credit rating was poor because of this

So i have gone for a current plus account with natwest as i dont want to have to pay for account just yet

But is there any reason why one bank says my credit rating is poor and another one is saying its excellent.

Each bank has their own criteria, perhaps Halifax's are stricter. Has your account with Halifax been managed well? Have you ever gone overdrawn without authorisation, ever? They may have internal scoring procedures which would preclude any account upgrades. Most banks do now (HSBC, NatWest and Lloyds TSB definitely do.)

You are aware that the advantage gold account is just a fancy name for a current account that costs you money each month and provides additional facilities that most don't use. :)

Have you ever been abusive to a member of the Halifax staff who has access to your computer record?

    But I am somewhat confused.
Are you saying that you have had a saving account (of some description) with the Halifax for 10 years and in all that time they wouldn't let you have a current account of any description? That seems odd.
Imprudent granting of credit is bound to prove just as ruinous to a bank as to any other merchant.
