I had this in Mexico last year.. My card got declined in a shop that I had tried to get all my holiday gifts from, been in there about 2 hrs picking out stuff.. was pretty annoyed, and so embarrased as it just declined.
Tried the cash machine but it wouldn't let me check my balance, so I presumed I had somehow run out of money..
Didn't get it sorted til i got home, bummer!BSC Member 155

I work at a championship football club and we had somthing similar to this actually happen.
Customer came in and said during a break in his season ticket was taken, obviously we gave him a relacement but asked if for a few games he could be relocated so we could check if someone was using his ticket to get in.
First match the stewards go to the seat to find someone in it, they ask to see his season ticket to check its his seat. He obliges and hands over the stolen season ticket! Instantly arrested and it was the guy that broke in.
Surely some sense should register here, sit in another seat??? lolGreen and White Barmy Army!0 -
Banks will have rules in place like this as long as fraud occurs. It is a pain for the consumer and the bank. My only tip would be to have more than one credit card, if one is declined then you have a back up. This happened to me at the start of the year, when I was told the reason why my card was declined whilst trying to buy two flights, I was happy something was being done to protect me.0

In Comet, just before Christmas, someone buying a television had the security thing with their card, and the shop had to phone through to the bank (from the number on the back of the card), then get the customer to confirm name, address etc.... before allowing the purchase to go through.
So I will presume they can still do it!! I've often seen people confused when their card is refused, but perhaps they don't want the hassle of holding up a big queue of people??
I think you'll find sometimes they will just be declined outright. I use to get it all the time.
By the way they're always confused when their cards are declined, no-one likes to publicly admit their broke!0 -
I get confused when my card has been turned down for no apparent reason, particularly as I have a card linked to my current account mortgage which always has a balance of £100,000 plus!0

Did you ask your bank why?
I know for a fact the authorisation code will only be given if the card had unusual activity and was suspected stolen. All other times it will just be declined, even with the above case cards are often deactivated until you phone them up and sort it out yourself.
Theres nothing a cashier can do. Why do they always get blamed!0 -
Who's blaming the cashier?0

Who's blaming the cashier? What I don't like is when shops are too lazy to go through the security check, and instead just tell you your card has been rejected!
It occured to me how many times when I worked in retail and had a card declined have people thought that?0 -

I echo that advice, went into Spar to buy a bottle of wine the other week, debit card was declined (I had more than enough in my account to pay for it, I'd only been paid a few days earlier!), but thankfully CC was nesting right beside it, or I'd have had to scadge money from mates."Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, But beautiful old people are works of art."
