Halogen ceiling light - is faulty contact fixable?

Our kitchen halogen spotlights (from Ikea) are giving us grief because 2 out of 4 bulbs come on only when we poke at them. This seems to indicate a faulty contact, especially since we've already tried replacing the bulbs. Before we go to the expense of getting an electrician in to replace the fitting, I just wondered whether any MSEers had had this problem and whether there's a standard solution.
Is it just me or does the general design of halogen bulbs and fittings leave a lot to be desired?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

We have one which sometimes decides to come on and other times doesn't, so I'm interested to know if anyone has any idea why?! I'm sorry if this sounds stupid but how do you know whether it is 12v or mains?Accepted offer on our house - Sept 2006

Hi,
12 volt have little transformer on end of wire, there are more technical approaches.
Try this, turn off power, that is leave lights on and turn off MCB. This will make sure you do not get fried. Pull bulb out and clean up contacts on lampholder with wire wool.
It worked for me!!

Grownup, you would be better to fit a new 12 volt lampholder if you can get one.(electrical wholesaler if B&Q don`t have them).
Anya , it may be your transformer that is faulty especially if it works when switched on then goes off & comes back on after a while. otherwise try new lampholder.0 -
Is it possible to get a new transformer - or is it not worth it? I bought the light off eBay for about £7, so I wouldn't be losing much!Accepted offer on our house - Sept 2006

Hi,
Screwfix do a great range of bits and pieces, they have a minimum order of £70 for free postage but sometimes do free postage offers. Their stuff is all trade quality and I bought all my lighting from them. Transformers, holders and lamps seperately.
Local electrical shops sell the same but a little dearer. Usually the guy behind the counter is a great source of information too.
